How do I turn off some of the things that appear on the left in the layered navigation?

Purpose:

To explain how turn off the item attributes that display in the layered navigation
Solution:
  1. Select Catalog (horizontal top menu) / Attributes / Manage Attributes.
  2. Find the attribute you wish to disable.
  3. Set "Use in Layered Navigation" to No.
  4. Save Changes by clicking the Save Attribute button.
