NRO Product Types

Overview: This article will explain the different product types as they are listed in the NRO admin panel

NCR Retail Online Product Types

Simple Products

Simple products come in two forms in NRO:
How can you tell the difference?

Configurable Products

Configurable products represent gridded items as they are uploaded from Counterpoint. Out of the box, the Magento platform does not understand the concept of a gridded item, but it does offer ways to recreate the concept.

Within Counterpoint, a gridded item is listed under a single SKU, and all the options can be viewed under the Grid tab on the item level. When this information gets uploaded to NRO, the core item is uploaded as a configurable product, which acts as the parent item. Each grid cell option is then uploaded as simple product that acts a child item to the configurable product.

As an example, using the image below, take a white t-shirt that is only gridded for size. This shirt has a total of five size options (Small, Medium, Large, X-Large, 2X-Large).

How can someone tell which simple product relates to which size? There are two ways:
  1. Select the item from the category and click on the NCR Counterpoint tab. The grid cell options for the item will be listed here.
  2. Add grid cell specific columns to the catalog. This can be done by going to System > Configuration > Enhanced Product Grid .
For this example, there were a total of six items created. In cases where there are multiple dimensions, more simple products will be created. If an item has a dimension with size, which has three sizes, and a dimension for color, and has three colors, that is a total of nine grid cell options. When uploaded to NRO, this one gridded item with have one configurable products and nine simple products.

Grouped Products

Grouped products represent items in Counterpoint that have alternate units. Examples of alternate units are when items can be sold in eaches, 6 packs, cases, or any other groupings of quantities. An example of a grouped item is displayed in the image below. Like Configurable products, the core item will be the parent, and each alternate unit will be uploaded as a simple item that is a child to the core product.

Unlike configurable products, the alternate unit name is attached to the item name in the catalog.  Grouped products are sorted by price on the storefront item detail pages.
