Creating Taxes in Counterpoint

In NRO, you have the opportunity to apply taxes as you desire to every shipping location you serve. You can specify whether to charge tax on a state-by-state basis, and you can manually specify a single tax rate for each state. If you want NRO to automatically calculate taxes based on the shopper's ship-to ZIP code, you use the AvaTax third party plugin. More information is available at the link below.

When orders are imported into CounterPoint, the taxes can be:

  • Imported: Taxes are imported from CPOnline, or
  • Calculated: CounterPoint calculates the tax based on the customer's tax code, or a combination of the customer's tax code plus the state to which the order will be shipped.
WARNING : Tax rules and regulations change frequently! Be sure to speak with your accountant or your Radiant Systems Retail Partner about setting up taxes in your state.

Tax Authority

Setup / System / Tax Auth
Browse to Setup / System / Tax Auth in Counterpoint. Once in the Tax Authority window, click the magnifying glass to open up the different tax authorities. There will be two main types of tax authorities that will be used for the web.
OST: Out of State Tax - This authority does not actually charge tax but is used for all non taxable locations you ship to.
State Tax: Local state tax - This is the tax you will use for your local state tax(es).
TIP: If you able to collect tax for any other state or location, you will need to have it set up here as well. Use your State Tax Authority as a base.
If you do not have a state or OST tax authority set up, you will need to create one.
  1. Enter the name of the tax authority rule. (For this example we will use OST .)
  2. Give the Tax Authority a name such as Out-Of-State Authority .
  3. Move to the Rules tab.
  4. Fill in all pertinent information on the Main , Applies to , and Tax tabs.
  5. Save your changes when done.
WARNING : If you need assistance filling out your tax authorities, be sure to contact your tax expert or Counterpoint partner. For you to collect proper taxes, these fields must be accurate.

Tax Codes

Setup / System / Tax Codes
Browse to your tax codes under Setup / System / Tax Codes .
You will now be creating tax codes for your web store. These tax codes will ONLY apply to your webstore and must be setup as outlined here. The first tax code you will create is called WEB and acts as a base for NRO to communicate with Counterpoint on which tax is which. Even though you may set your taxes up in Setup / Ecommerce / Control as imported, Counterpoint still needs to know which state the tax is coming into for bookkeeping. The WEB file as a "middle" man between your NRO taxes and your Counterpoint taxes.
