We have been analyzing the NCR Retail Online (NRO) business and our NCR Industry Solutions Board, an internal team that helps set strategy, has decided to set the NRO product to End of Life on March 31, 2018 . The CPOnline Product was also recently announced with an end of life date of September 30th, 2017 . The End of Life terms indicate that all current customers will need to be transitioned off their respective product and the servers turned off by 9/30/17 (CPO) & 3/31/18 (NRO) . Your NCR Counterpoint business partner has been notified of this decision in advance and has started taking steps to help you transition your eCommerce solution.

Choosing the Right Hosting Model After NCR Retail OnlineThe discontinuation of NCR Retail Online creates a practical technology decision for retailers using NCR Counterpoint or related business systems. Moving to a replacement ecommerce platform is more than a storefront redesign: hosting affects inventory accuracy, operating costs, security, integrations, and how quickly your team can respond when something goes wrong. Learn more about Ncrretailonline.com. Cloud hosting and on-premise hosting can both support a post-NCR store, but they place responsibility in different areas. Cloud services generally offer managed infrastructure and easier scaling, while an on-premise environment provides greater control over servers, data location, and customized system administration. The best choice depends on your store’s transaction volume, technical resources, compliance requirements, budget, and tolerance for maintenance. Before selecting Magento, WooCommerce, or another platform through an NCR Counterpoint partner, evaluate the full operating model rather than comparing monthly hosting prices alone. Start With Your Store’s Operating RequirementsBegin by documenting how your current store works. Identify the systems that handle product data, pricing, customer records, tax rules, orders, fulfillment, returns, and inventory updates. A replacement platform must communicate reliably with these systems, especially if your physical locations and ecommerce site draw from the same stock. Retailers should also review the information provided about existing subscriptions. Understanding license status, account obligations, exports, and transition deadlines can prevent rushed decisions and help preserve essential business data before the old service is retired. Peak demand matters as much as average demand. A store with seasonal sales, promotions, or multiple locations may need flexible capacity and strong performance under traffic spikes. A smaller retailer with steady order volume might benefit from a simpler setup, provided it still receives dependable backups, security updates, and integration support. How Cloud Hosting Fits a Post-NCR StoreWith cloud hosting, the ecommerce application and its supporting infrastructure run in a data center managed by a hosting provider or platform vendor. The provider typically handles server provisioning, hardware replacement, network availability, and some aspects of monitoring. Your business remains responsible for application configuration, access permissions, content, and the quality of integrations. The principal advantage is operational flexibility. Cloud resources can often scale during high-volume periods, and remote teams can access administrative tools without maintaining a private server room. Managed services may also include automated backups, malware scanning, firewalls, content delivery networks, and routine operating system maintenance. Cloud hosting is not automatically secure or reliable. Security depends on configuration, software quality, identity controls, vendor practices, and clear responsibility boundaries. Before signing an agreement, check recovery procedures, service-level commitments, data export options, support response times, and whether the provider permits the extensions required by your chosen ecommerce platform. Where On-Premise Hosting Still Makes SenseOn-premise hosting places servers and core software under the retailer’s direct control, either at a store, headquarters, or a private colocation facility. This model can suit businesses with established IT personnel, specialized hardware, strict data residency rules, or legacy integrations that are difficult to move into a managed environment. Direct control can support deep customization. Your team may determine when updates occur, how network traffic is managed, and which systems connect to the ecommerce application. For a retailer with predictable demand and existing infrastructure, using owned equipment may appear more economical over several years. The tradeoff is a larger operational burden. Hardware failures, power interruptions, internet outages, patching, backups, vulnerability management, and disaster recovery become your responsibility. A single unplanned failure can affect both online orders and store operations if the ecommerce system shares infrastructure with point-of-sale or inventory services.
Compare Cost, Control, and Business ContinuityA fair cost comparison includes more than hosting fees. For cloud deployment, calculate subscriptions, storage, bandwidth, premium support, backup retention, managed security, payment services, and charges for extra environments. For on-premise deployment, include hardware refreshes, power, cooling, connectivity, warranties, software licenses, monitoring tools, security services, and staff time. Business continuity deserves equal attention. Ask how quickly each model can restore the storefront, process orders, and synchronize inventory after a failure. A provider may advertise backups, but backups are useful only when they are complete, protected from tampering, and regularly tested through an actual restoration exercise. Consider the cost of downtime across every sales channel. If an unavailable website causes overselling, delayed fulfillment, customer service calls, and manual stock corrections, the financial impact can exceed the hosting bill. Cloud redundancy may reduce some risks, while an expertly designed on-premise environment can also be resilient. Architecture and operating discipline matter more than the label. Protect Integrations During the Platform MoveThe hosting decision should be made alongside the platform migration plan. Magento and WooCommerce can be deployed in different ways, and each may require extensions or custom connectors for Counterpoint, payment processing, shipping, tax calculation, search, email marketing, and analytics. Review the replacement platform features before approving a technical design. Inventory synchronization is especially important. Define which system is the source of truth for stock levels, product attributes, prices, customer accounts, and order status. Establish how frequently data moves, what happens when a connection fails, and how duplicate or conflicting records are resolved. Use a staging environment to test imports, checkout, discounts, shipping rates, refunds, cancellations, and multi-location inventory. Do not wait until launch day to discover that a custom field was omitted or that a product update overwrites a carefully configured online description. A controlled test cycle also makes it easier to compare cloud and on-premise performance under realistic workloads. Make Security and Governance Part of the DecisionSecurity requirements should be written into the hosting evaluation. Look for encrypted connections, multifactor authentication, role-based permissions, malware protection, vulnerability scanning, audit logs, and secure handling of payment information. Limit administrative access and remove accounts promptly when employees or contractors leave. Cloud providers should explain their compliance posture, subcontractors, data centers, incident notification process, and tenant isolation controls. On-premise operators need equivalent documentation for physical access, network segmentation, patch schedules, endpoint protection, and off-site backup storage. In either model, a secure payment gateway can reduce the amount of sensitive card data handled by the store. Governance also covers ownership and portability. Confirm that you can export products, customers, orders, media, and configuration data in usable formats. Review contract termination terms and identify who owns custom code. A platform that is easy to enter but difficult to leave can create another expensive dependency after the NCR transition. Practical Recommendations for Selecting HostingUse a decision process that reflects the retailer’s actual capabilities rather than general assumptions about modern infrastructure.
A hybrid arrangement may also be appropriate. For example, the ecommerce storefront can run in the cloud while selected retail systems remain on private infrastructure, connected through secured APIs or middleware. This can reduce migration risk, although it introduces integration complexity that must be monitored continuously. Move Forward With a Measured TransitionThere is no universal winner between cloud and on-premise hosting for a post-NCR store. Cloud is often the practical choice for retailers seeking managed operations and scalable performance, while on-premise can work well for organizations with specialized requirements and mature technical teams. The right model is the one that protects trading continuity while supporting future growth. Create a requirements document, obtain comparable proposals, and have an NCR Counterpoint partner validate the integration design before committing. Start with a test migration, confirm data quality, train staff, and schedule the final cutover around a period of manageable order volume. A deliberate hosting decision can turn the end of NCR Retail Online into a controlled transition rather than an interruption to everyday retail operations. |
