We have been analyzing the NCR Retail Online (NRO) business and our NCR Industry Solutions Board, an internal team that helps set strategy, has decided to set the NRO product to End of Life on March 31, 2018 . The CPOnline Product was also recently announced with an end of life date of September 30th, 2017 . The End of Life terms indicate that all current customers will need to be transitioned off their respective product and the servers turned off by 9/30/17 (CPO) & 3/31/18 (NRO) . Your NCR Counterpoint business partner has been notified of this decision in advance and has started taking steps to help you transition your eCommerce solution.

Handling Gift Wrapping And Special Instructions Without NCR Tools

Gift wrapping and personal messages are small checkout details that can have a large effect on customer satisfaction. When an ecommerce platform no longer provides native fields for these requests, retailers need a practical way to collect, price, store and fulfil them without creating confusion for staff.

NCR Retail Online has been discontinued, so Australian retailers moving to Magento, WooCommerce or another platform may need to recreate operational features that were previously built into their workflow. Gift options should be treated as structured order data rather than informal notes scattered across emails, phone calls and packing slips.

A reliable replacement combines checkout fields, product options, order tags, inventory rules and fulfilment procedures. The best setup is simple for shoppers in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and regional areas, while giving store teams enough detail to pack each order accurately.

Requirement Practical replacement Main benefit
Gift wrapping choice Product add-on, checkbox or variation Captures a clear yes/no request
Wrapping style Dropdown with limited options Prevents vague customer notes
Gift message Validated text field Keeps messages readable and appropriate
Extra wrapping fee Separate service product or surcharge Makes pricing visible
Recipient address Standard shipping fields Supports direct-to-recipient delivery
Staff instructions Order note, tag and packing slip Reduces missed requests
Stock control Wrapping supplies as tracked items Prevents shortages during busy periods

Map Each Customer Request

Start by separating the different services customers may mean when they ask for gift wrapping. A basic option might include paper and ribbon, while premium packaging could include a gift box, handwritten card or branded sleeve. “Please make it look special” is not a fulfilment instruction, so the checkout should guide shoppers towards defined choices.

A useful model has three parts: whether wrapping is required, which style is selected and what message should be included. Keep the message field optional, set a sensible character limit and explain that offensive or unusually long content may be adjusted. Customers buying several products should also be able to indicate whether everything should be wrapped together or packed separately.

Australian shopping habits make this distinction important around Christmas, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and birthdays. A Melbourne customer sending a present to Perth may expect the parcel to arrive ready to give, while a local click-and-collect shopper may simply want a card included in the bag.

Capture Options At Checkout

In WooCommerce, gift wrapping can be implemented as an add-on, product variation or separate service item. A checkbox is suitable for a single wrapping fee, while variations work better when customers choose between standard paper, a gift box or a reusable fabric option. The checkout flow guide provides useful context for rebuilding checkout behaviour after leaving NCR Retail Online.

The selection should appear close to the relevant product or cart line, rather than being buried in a general order-comments box. If a customer buys three different gifts, the interface should make it clear whether the wrapping request applies to one item, every item or the whole order. A short preview of the chosen service can reduce mistakes before payment.

Mobile presentation deserves particular attention because many Australian customers shop on phones during commutes or lunch breaks. Fields should be easy to tap, and the message should remain visible during the final review. Avoid forcing shoppers to repeat information in both the product page and checkout unless the system clearly carries it forward.

Separate Service Fees From Stock

A wrapping charge should be visible before payment and recorded in a way that staff can understand. The simplest method is a separate “Gift Wrapping” service product with its own price. More advanced stores may use conditional fees based on wrapping style, product size or the number of parcels required.

Wrapping paper, boxes, ribbon and cards also consume real stock. If these supplies are treated as unlimited, an online promotion can create more orders than the packing team can handle. Retailers using a platform with stronger inventory controls should compare how it handles bundled services and component stock; this analysis of inventory management differences is relevant when selecting a replacement.

Do not deduct wrapping materials simply because a customer adds an item to a cart if the order may later be cancelled. A reservation or low-stock alert is usually safer, with the final deduction occurring when the order enters fulfilment. This approach is especially useful before Boxing Day, when demand can change rapidly.

Turn Notes Into Staff Instructions

Customer wording should be converted into concise operational data. A packing slip might show “WRAP: Kraft paper; CARD: Happy birthday, Sam; PACK: Separate items,” rather than reproducing a long paragraph from the checkout. Order tags such as gift-wrap, gift-message and split-pack allow staff to filter relevant orders.

The packing station should have a repeatable process. Staff can pick the merchandise, verify the wrapping option, check the message against the order, wrap the item and perform a second scan before sealing the parcel. A sample wrapped order kept at the station can help casual staff maintain a consistent standard during seasonal hiring.

Automation should support judgement rather than hide details. Rules-based systems can assign tags, trigger internal alerts and route unusual requests to a supervisor. The same principle appears in automated eligibility checks: clear conditions produce reliable outcomes, while ambiguous data still needs human review.

Manage Delivery And Customer Expectations

Gift wrapping does not change the shipping destination, but it can change parcel size, weight and handling time. A gift box may require different packaging from a standard satchel, affecting Australia Post rates or courier pricing. Make sure the checkout’s delivery estimate includes the time needed for wrapping, particularly for customers ordering from Adelaide for delivery to remote Western Australia or Tasmania.

The order confirmation should repeat the selected service, message and recipient details. If a customer enters a message but chooses no wrapping, the system should either explain that the card will be included separately or prevent the mismatch. Clear confirmation emails reduce follow-up calls and give customer service a reference point when an order is amended.

Privacy also matters. Gift messages may contain personal information, and recipient addresses should be visible only to staff who need them. Set retention rules for exported packing lists and avoid printing unnecessary payment or customer data at the wrapping station.

Test The Workflow Before Launch

Test the complete journey with several combinations: one wrapped product, multiple wrapped products, a shared message, separate messages, no wrapping, click and collect, express delivery and an out-of-stock packaging item. Check the cart, payment confirmation, order administration screen, warehouse printout and customer email.

Include failure scenarios. What happens if a customer removes the wrapped product but leaves the wrapping service in the cart? Can a staff member edit the message after payment? Does a refund remove the wrapping fee? Are gift instructions still visible when an order is split between stores?

Small technical details can have disproportionate operational effects, much like replacing an ageing hardware component such as the X68000 clock battery. Record the workflow, test it after plugin or theme updates and assign ownership for maintenance so the feature does not quietly fail after a platform change.

Keep The Experience Consistent

Review wrapping requests, refunds, customer complaints and packing errors each month. If shoppers frequently ask for “no invoice in the box,” add that as a clear option. If staff regularly confuse standard and premium packaging, simplify the names or show photographs at checkout and in the fulfilment area.

Australian retailers should also account for GST display, local pickup rules and seasonal demand. Prices should be shown in Australian dollars, and any wrapping surcharge should be treated consistently with the store’s tax configuration. During Christmas trading, set a cut-off date for guaranteed delivery and state whether wrapping is available for every product, including oversized goods.

The strongest replacement for NCR’s built-in tools is not a single plugin or isolated checkout field. It is a connected process in which customers make precise selections, the ecommerce platform stores those selections with the order, inventory reflects the materials used and staff receive instructions they can follow. The key point to remember is that gift wrapping becomes dependable when it is managed as structured fulfilment data from checkout through dispatch.

After you have completed your move to a new eCommerce platform, don’t forget to submit the Store Closure Request form to close your NRO site and cancel your billing subscription.
