How to Migrate SEO Metadata from NCR to Your New Store

When NCR Retail Online is replaced by Magento, WooCommerce, or another ecommerce platform, preserving search visibility requires more than copying product names and prices. SEO metadata describes how search engines interpret each page, while URL structures, templates, and technical settings determine whether that information remains accessible after launch.

A careful migration transfers page titles, meta descriptions, canonical URLs, robots directives, image alt text, structured data, and social sharing fields. It also protects the authority earned by existing product, category, brand, and informational pages through redirects and consistent internal linking.

The work should begin with an inventory of the current store rather than with the new platform’s import tool. The NCR Retail Online site provides useful context about the discontinued platform and the move toward alternative ecommerce systems supported by NCR Counterpoint partners.

Audit The Existing Store Before Exporting

Create a complete crawl of the NCR store before making changes. Record every indexable URL, HTTP status, page type, title tag, meta description, heading structure, canonical tag, robots directive, image alternative text, and structured data element. A crawler can identify pages that are missing metadata as well as duplicate or overly long fields.

Export product and category data from the administrative system, then compare it with data collected from the live website. These sources may differ because discontinued products, seasonal landing pages, filtered collections, and manually created content are often absent from a standard catalog export.

Pay special attention to URLs receiving organic traffic or external links. Analytics, Google Search Console, server logs, and backlink tools can reveal valuable pages that are no longer prominent in the store navigation. Preserve these URLs in the migration map even if the corresponding products are no longer sold.

Map Metadata To The New Platform

The destination platform may use different field names and content rules. Magento commonly separates metadata settings across products, categories, store views, and design configurations. WooCommerce often relies on an SEO plugin for titles, descriptions, canonical tags, schema, and robots controls. A direct column-to-column import is therefore rarely sufficient.

Build a source-to-destination mapping for every SEO field. Product titles may become page titles with a brand suffix, while category descriptions may move into a dedicated content editor. Canonical URLs might be generated automatically, and robots directives could be controlled through global settings rather than individual product records.

Decide which fields should be preserved exactly and which should be rewritten. Existing titles and descriptions with strong click-through rates deserve careful protection. Thin, duplicated, or outdated copy can be improved during migration, but changing large numbers of URLs and metadata fields at the same time makes performance changes harder to diagnose.

Preserve High-Value URLs And Signals

Metadata cannot preserve rankings if the old URL returns an error. Create a redirect spreadsheet that pairs every important NCR URL with its closest equivalent on the new store. Use permanent server-side redirects, usually 301 responses, and avoid sending discontinued product pages to the homepage unless no relevant replacement exists.

A product that has a direct successor should redirect to that successor. A retired product with no replacement may point to a related category, brand page, or carefully written discontinued-product page. Redirect chains should be avoided because each additional hop adds latency and can weaken the clarity of the migration.

Canonical tags must reflect the final preferred URLs, not the old NCR addresses. Check pagination, faceted navigation, search results, trailing slashes, uppercase characters, and tracking parameters. If the new store creates several addresses for the same product or category, establish a consistent canonicalization policy before launch.

The following field map helps separate content migration from technical implementation:

SEO element Source-store action New-store implementation Validation method
Page title Export and assess length, intent, and uniqueness Product, category, CMS, or SEO-plugin field Crawl for duplicates and truncation
Meta description Preserve strong performers and revise weak copy Template or page-level description field Compare rendered HTML and search snippets
Canonical URL Record current preferred address Platform setting or SEO extension Inspect source and URL Inspection data
Robots directive Identify noindex and crawl rules Global, template, or page-level setting Crawl and inspect headers
Open Graph data Export social titles, descriptions, and images Theme or SEO-plugin configuration Share previews and source inspection
Structured data Record product, breadcrumb, organization, and review markup Theme, extension, or custom template Rich Results Test and schema validation
Image alt text Preserve descriptive accessibility copy Media library or product-image fields Crawl image attributes and sample pages

Recreate Titles, Descriptions, And Schema

A strong title usually combines the primary product or category term with a distinguishing attribute and, where appropriate, the store or brand name. Avoid inserting the same keyword repeatedly. Titles should describe the page accurately and help shoppers understand what makes the offering relevant.

Meta descriptions do not directly determine rankings, but they influence search-result engagement. Write distinct descriptions that communicate product benefits, availability, delivery information, or category breadth. Avoid relying on one generic template for every page, especially when products have different specifications and buying motivations.

Structured data deserves separate testing because a new theme can remove or alter markup without an obvious visual change. Validate Product, Offer, BreadcrumbList, Organization, and Review data where applicable. Confirm that price, currency, stock status, identifiers, brand, and review information match the visible page and comply with search engine guidelines.

Images also carry SEO and accessibility value. Transfer meaningful alt text rather than filenames or keyword lists, retain important image dimensions, and check that the new content delivery network does not block crawling. Open Graph titles, descriptions, and images should be tested independently because social platforms may cache older values.

Handle Canonicals, Robots, And Internal Links

Review global robots.txt rules and XML sitemaps in the staging environment. A common migration error is leaving a development noindex directive active after launch, or blocking JavaScript, CSS, product images, and important folders that search engines need to render the page correctly.

Generate new XML sitemaps containing only canonical, indexable, status-code-200 URLs. Submit them through Google Search Console and other relevant webmaster tools after the domain is live. Keep the old sitemap available only long enough to support discovery of redirected URLs, if technically appropriate, and remove stale entries once the migration settles.

Internal links should point directly to the new addresses. Update navigation, breadcrumbs, related-product modules, blog links, footer pages, and image links instead of relying on redirects. This improves crawl efficiency and helps transfer contextual relevance through the new site architecture.

Payment and checkout changes can affect indexable content, tracking, and conversion paths. Before modifying those areas, review WooCommerce payment options so SEO testing does not overlook the relationship between storefront templates, checkout behavior, and analytics measurement.

Test The Migration In A Staging Environment

Build a password-protected staging copy that can be crawled by approved testers but remains blocked from public indexing. Compare a representative sample of products, categories, brand pages, blog content, and discontinued items against the source export. Verify that metadata appears in rendered HTML rather than only inside an administrative field.

Test mobile rendering, page speed, JavaScript-dependent content, pagination, filters, and variant URLs. Confirm that titles and descriptions do not disappear when a product has multiple options or when a category is empty. Check that structured data remains present after caching and minification are enabled.

At launch, monitor response codes, redirect hits, index coverage, crawl statistics, organic sessions, rankings, and conversions. A temporary fluctuation is possible as search engines recrawl the new architecture, but widespread 404 responses, unexpected noindex tags, canonical conflicts, or sharp drops in indexed URLs require immediate investigation.

Coordinate The Cutover Across Channels

A retail migration affects more than organic search. Product feeds, paid shopping campaigns, social catalogs, email links, marketplace listings, and in-store promotions may still reference NCR URLs. Update these sources with the new addresses or ensure that redirects remain reliable and measurable.

Multi-channel sellers should also account for inventory and catalog synchronization. The guidance on multi-channel selling changes highlights why platform replacement can affect operational workflows alongside storefront SEO. Broken feeds or mismatched product identifiers can create commercial problems even when the visible website appears healthy.

Use annotations in analytics when the migration goes live and compare performance by page type, device, country, and traffic source. Maintain the redirect map and crawl reports for several months. Search engines, customers, affiliates, and external websites may continue requesting old NCR addresses long after the initial launch.

Migration Priorities To Keep Performance Stable

  • Crawl and export every valuable NCR URL before changing templates or catalog data.
  • Map old addresses to the most relevant new pages and implement direct 301 redirects.
  • Transfer titles, descriptions, canonicals, robots rules, schema, image alt text, and social metadata.
  • Test staging pages, sitemaps, structured data, mobile rendering, and checkout tracking before launch.
  • Monitor errors, index coverage, rankings, organic revenue, and redirect activity after the cutover.

A successful metadata migration treats SEO as part of the store’s data model and technical architecture. Start with a defensible inventory, assign every important field to a clear destination, and validate the live result with crawls and search diagnostics. That process gives the new Magento, WooCommerce, or partner-supported storefront the best chance of retaining its existing visibility while creating a cleaner foundation for future growth.

After you have completed your move to a new eCommerce platform, don’t forget to submit the Store Closure Request form to close your NRO site and cancel your billing subscription.
