We have been analyzing the NCR Retail Online (NRO) business and our NCR Industry Solutions Board, an internal team that helps set strategy, has decided to set the NRO product to End of Life on March 31, 2018 . The CPOnline Product was also recently announced with an end of life date of September 30th, 2017 . The End of Life terms indicate that all current customers will need to be transitioned off their respective product and the servers turned off by 9/30/17 (CPO) & 3/31/18 (NRO) . Your NCR Counterpoint business partner has been notified of this decision in advance and has started taking steps to help you transition your eCommerce solution.

Set Up NCR’s Real-Time Shipment Tracking in WooCommerceNCR Retail Online connected ecommerce storefronts with retail inventory and business systems, but its discontinuation changed how retailers align storefront orders with store operations. The practical successor for many Australian merchants is WooCommerce running alongside NCR Counterpoint through an integration partner, not a direct NCR plug-in. A live tracking feed normally begins when a parcel is manifested, then passes through the carrier, operational system and ecommerce platform. The hard part is matching every event to the correct WooCommerce order, preserving its history and presenting a status customers can trust. That status must fit Australian delivery conditions. A parcel leaving a Sydney warehouse may travel to a regional postcode through Australia Post, while a Melbourne order may use a local courier or pickup point. Storefronts need clear carrier names, meaningful dates and a fallback when the live feed pauses. This guide explains how to set up NCR’s real-time shipment tracking integration in WooCommerce through a supported partner or middleware route. It assumes access to WooCommerce administration, Counterpoint data, test parcels and documented credentials; the partner’s current specification takes precedence where implementations differ.
Understand the supported NCR-to-WooCommerce routeConfirm the supported path before configuring plugins. Because NCR Retail Online has been discontinued, ask the Counterpoint partner which shipment-event interface and service levels remain active. The NCR Retail Online site provides historical context, while the partner’s current documentation should define credentials, payloads and endpoints. Counterpoint should remain the operational source for order and stock truth, while WooCommerce owns the customer-facing checkout and presentation. The bridge passes parcel references into WooCommerce and sends confirmed order changes back to Counterpoint. This prevents two systems from independently changing stock and creating conflicting order states. Define a shipment status model before writing code. Decide which states customers see, which events are stored, who may cancel or replace a parcel, and how unknown carrier codes are handled. A successful setup delivers each accepted event once, updates the correct order promptly and leaves an audit trail when processing fails. Prepare WooCommerce, Counterpoint and data mappingsBuild on a staging clone with current WordPress and WooCommerce versions, HTTPS, working scheduled tasks and tested backups. Confirm that PHP, cURL and required database extensions are available. Create a dedicated WooCommerce REST API credential with the minimum required permissions, making it easier to revoke than shared administrator access. Map the fields that join the platforms: WooCommerce order number, Counterpoint transaction ID, SKU, store or warehouse, shipping method, carrier, tracking number and internal parcel reference. Preserve these values rather than deriving them from customer names or addresses. During product migration, the NCR product migration guide helps check catalogue identifiers and media consistency. Create separate credentials and endpoints for test and live traffic. Store secrets in environment settings or a managed secret store, never in the plugin repository, and restrict administrative changes with role-based access. Give the tracking integration access only to the order or shipment fields it needs, and establish a documented credential-rotation schedule. Connect the live shipment event feedUse a webhook-first design for genuine live updates. When Counterpoint or its partner records a shipment event, the adapter posts it to a dedicated WooCommerce endpoint or plugin. The event should include an event ID, order reference, parcel ID, carrier, tracking number, status, event time and estimated delivery date. The endpoint validates the payload and uses supported WooCommerce APIs instead of writing directly to the database. The receiving endpoint should require HTTPS, verify a timestamp and HMAC signature, reject stale or replayed requests, and use an allowlisted source where supported. Apply strict field and payload-size checks, redact personal data from logs and acknowledge valid requests quickly. Move slower work into a queue so carrier delays cannot cause repeated webhook failures. If the route still crosses an old Java service, use the Java 5 deployment notes during discovery to identify runtime assumptions and upgrade risks. Treat them as compatibility evidence, not a reason to standardise an obsolete runtime. The long-term bridge should expose a small, versioned event contract that can be tested independently of carrier and WooCommerce releases. Map parcels, statuses and inventory safelyStore the carrier name, tracking or consignment number, shipment status, latest event description, event timestamp, estimated delivery date and partner event ID on the relevant order. Translate carrier-specific states into a small set such as pending, in transit, out for delivery, delivered and exception. Retain the raw carrier status as well, so future mappings do not lose detail. Support partial fulfilment properly. One order may have two parcels with different carriers and delivery dates, so attach tracking to shipment records rather than a single order field when the chosen plugin permits it. Update inventory only through the agreed stock rule, and prevent WooCommerce and Counterpoint from decrementing the same units independently. Make every incoming event idempotent by storing its unique identifier and comparing event timestamps before applying an update. Process records in Test the full customer tracking journeyRun a controlled matrix in staging: a normal metropolitan order, a regional order, a multi-parcel order, an unknown carrier event, a duplicated webhook, an out-of-order event and a carrier outage. Use real test labels but synthetic customer details. Confirm that valid updates succeed, malformed payloads are rejected and retries remain safe. Verify the customer journey as well as the backend. Place an order, receive the despatch notification, open the order or My Account page, and check that the carrier, tracking number, latest event and expected date are readable on desktop and mobile. Store staff should see the same current state in the admin order view without exposing raw payload fields. Exercise the fallback before launch. If webhooks stop, the polling job should retrieve missing carrier events, compare timestamps and close the gap. Reconcile WooCommerce shipment records against the partner and carrier each day, then investigate unmatched events until they are resolved or documented as permanent exceptions. Meet Australian delivery, privacy and consumer needsAustralian delivery routes vary sharply across Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, regional towns and remote communities. The local carrier mix includes Australia Post, StarTrack, Aramex and OnTrac, while shoppers often choose standard delivery, express service, a pickup point or click-and-collect. Capture the selected service at checkout and show tracking states that make regional delays understandable. Tracking records can reveal names, addresses, signatures, phone numbers and delivery locations. Where the Privacy Act 1988 applies, handle personal information under the Australian Privacy Principles, document its purpose and retention, restrict staff access and provide correction or deletion processes where required. Also check applicable state and territory privacy rules, and avoid placing full addresses or signatures into general-purpose logs. Delivery claims must remain consistent with the Australian Consumer Law. A guaranteed date shown at checkout should not be contradicted later without a lawful basis and reasonable communication. Transactional emails may contain order details, but marketing messages need consent under the Spam Act 2003. Keep shipment notices separate from promotional campaigns and make unsubscribe choices straightforward. Operate the integration with lasting visibilityMonitor the bridge rather than relying on the storefront’s green status. Record event acceptance, update latency, retries, dead-letter items, unmatched order references and carrier API failures. Set alerts for rising failures or a feed that has delivered no events during expected despatch hours. Review these measures weekly at first, then at a cadence that matches order volume. Document field ownership, supported carriers, status mappings, credential rotation, replay procedures and the escalation path for Counterpoint or carrier incidents. Retain enough event history to investigate a delivery dispute, then apply the agreed retention schedule. Remove unused NCR Retail Online plugins, exposed endpoints and dormant credentials once the successor platform has proved stable. The arrangement worth remembering is simple: NCR and Counterpoint provide operational order truth, WooCommerce presents the customer-facing status, and a secure, observable event bridge keeps both views aligned. When those responsibilities remain clear, live tracking becomes dependable information rather than a decorative field on an order page. |
