We have been analyzing the NCR Retail Online (NRO) business and our NCR Industry Solutions Board, an internal team that helps set strategy, has decided to set the NRO product to End of Life on March 31, 2018 . The CPOnline Product was also recently announced with an end of life date of September 30th, 2017 . The End of Life terms indicate that all current customers will need to be transitioned off their respective product and the servers turned off by 9/30/17 (CPO) & 3/31/18 (NRO) . Your NCR Counterpoint business partner has been notified of this decision in advance and has started taking steps to help you transition your eCommerce solution.

Using Counterpoint POS Data With a WooCommerce StorefrontA WooCommerce storefront can extend a Counterpoint retail operation without forcing staff to maintain two unrelated product catalogs. When the systems are connected correctly, Counterpoint remains the operational source for store sales, purchasing, customer records, and stock control, while WooCommerce manages online browsing, checkout, content, and digital merchandising. The goal is more than displaying products on a website. A dependable integration should keep inventory quantities, prices, product details, orders, and fulfillment statuses aligned. It should also define which system owns each type of data, how frequently updates occur, and what happens when a connection fails. This approach is especially relevant for retailers moving away from NCR Retail Online after its discontinuation. Counterpoint partners can help businesses transition to WooCommerce or Magento, but the quality of the result depends on planning the data flow before products and orders begin moving between platforms. Define The Role Of Each SystemCounterpoint is usually best suited to serve as the master record for inventory, purchasing, receiving, store-level sales, vendors, and product costing. WooCommerce should focus on the customer-facing experience: categories, product pages, online payments, shipping options, promotions, and search engine content. A written ownership map prevents conflicting edits. For example, a product’s SKU and available quantity may come from Counterpoint, while its long description, lifestyle photography, and search-friendly page title may be managed in WooCommerce. If both systems can change the same field, an integration needs a clear priority rule. Decide how locations will be represented as well. A retailer with several stores might publish combined stock, designate one warehouse for web orders, or display only inventory above a safety threshold. Reserving a small buffer can prevent online customers from buying an item that is physically available but already committed to a store order. Prepare A Clean Product CatalogProduct synchronization works best when the Counterpoint catalog is standardized before the first import. Review duplicate SKUs, discontinued items, missing weights, inconsistent brand names, and products that lack usable descriptions. Variations such as size, color, finish, or configuration should have a consistent structure in both systems. Images deserve separate attention. Counterpoint may contain operational product data without the photography needed for effective ecommerce merchandising. WooCommerce can hold multiple images, videos, downloadable manuals, and buying guides, but each asset should be connected to the correct SKU or variation. Retailers selling large or specialized goods should also plan for delivery details. A furniture catalog, for instance, may require dimensions, assembly information, room-of-choice delivery, lead times, and fabric or finish choices. A relevant furniture catalog example illustrates why ecommerce content often needs more detail than a traditional point-of-sale item record. Build A Reliable Data ConnectionThe connection between Counterpoint and WooCommerce may use an API, middleware, an integration plugin, or custom services supplied by a Counterpoint partner. The technology matters, but the integration rules matter more. Each field should have a defined format, update direction, and error response. Inventory changes need a faster schedule than occasional catalog content updates. A common arrangement sends stock adjustments from Counterpoint to WooCommerce frequently, imports new online orders into Counterpoint, and updates order status back to the website after payment, picking, shipping, or cancellation. For technical teams, this API synchronization guide provides useful context for connecting inventory services. The implementation should include authentication, rate-limit handling, logging, retry logic, and a queue for transactions that cannot be processed immediately. Never assume that a successful API response means the business process is complete. The system should verify that the SKU exists, the quantity is valid, the order total matches expectations, and the destination location can fulfill the request. Exceptions should appear in a dashboard or alert inbox rather than disappearing into a server log. Choose The Right Sync ModelDifferent retail businesses need different synchronization patterns. A small store with modest order volume may be comfortable with scheduled imports every 15 or 30 minutes. A high-volume retailer, or one selling scarce products, may require event-driven updates that reduce the period during which website stock can become stale.
A batch model is easier to monitor and may be less expensive to operate. Real-time or near-real-time integration offers better stock accuracy but requires stronger infrastructure and more careful handling of duplicate events. Some retailers use a hybrid model: immediate order transmission and frequent inventory updates, with slower overnight synchronization for descriptions and images. Include reconciliation jobs regardless of the model. A daily process can compare Counterpoint inventory against WooCommerce quantities, identify orders missing from either system, and flag price differences. Reconciliation is a safety net for outages, manual edits, canceled transactions, and integration changes. Protect Orders And Customer InformationAn online order should enter Counterpoint with enough information for staff to fulfill it accurately. That may include the WooCommerce order number, customer identity, billing and shipping addresses, payment status, discounts, taxes, shipping charges, line items, and requested fulfillment location. Avoid copying sensitive payment details into Counterpoint. WooCommerce and its payment gateway should handle card information using compliant tokenization or hosted payment processes. Counterpoint generally needs confirmation that payment was authorized, not the customer’s full card number or security code. Access should follow the principle of least privilege. Use separate credentials for development and production, rotate API keys, restrict administrative accounts, and encrypt traffic between systems. Logs should record transaction IDs and error details without exposing passwords, payment data, or unnecessary personal information. Before launch, test canceled orders, partial refunds, backorders, split shipments, tax changes, duplicate webhooks, and products with zero stock. Staff should know how to pause synchronization, correct an exception, and restart processing without creating duplicate orders. Plan The Retailer Transition CarefullyMoving from NCR Retail Online to WooCommerce is a business transition as much as a technical project. Estimate the work involved in catalog cleanup, theme design, payment setup, shipping rules, redirects, integration development, staff training, and post-launch support. A discussion of platform migration costs can help retailers identify expenses that are easy to overlook. Keep the existing storefront available while the replacement is built in a protected staging environment. Import a representative selection of products first, including simple products, variations, discontinued items, taxable goods, backorders, and location-specific stock. Then run test orders from checkout through Counterpoint fulfillment. A launch checklist should include DNS and SSL settings, search-engine redirects, analytics, email notifications, tax calculations, shipping rates, inventory buffers, and customer-service procedures. Schedule the final migration during a low-volume period and define a rollback plan before switching traffic. Useful operating practices include:
A well-designed connection lets Counterpoint continue supporting retail operations while WooCommerce delivers a flexible online buying experience. Start by documenting data ownership, cleaning the catalog, and selecting a Counterpoint partner who can support the integration after launch. Then build in stages, measure synchronization accuracy, and make reconciliation part of everyday retail operations rather than an emergency task. |
