We have been analyzing the NCR Retail Online (NRO) business and our NCR Industry Solutions Board, an internal team that helps set strategy, has decided to set the NRO product to End of Life on March 31, 2018 . The CPOnline Product was also recently announced with an end of life date of September 30th, 2017 . The End of Life terms indicate that all current customers will need to be transitioned off their respective product and the servers turned off by 9/30/17 (CPO) & 3/31/18 (NRO) . Your NCR Counterpoint business partner has been notified of this decision in advance and has started taking steps to help you transition your eCommerce solution.
Next Steps
As of today, we are encouraging all customers to reach out to your current NCR Counterpoint Partner to begin the transition to a new eCommerce platform. Your partner will be your best resource in planning and transitioning to a new eCommerce solution.
NCR has worked with several partners to create options for your new eCommerce solution. Please refer to the below chart for information about these options. Your partner can provide you with further documentation about these solutions to assist you with the decision process. You can also view a list of FAQ’s about moving from NRO to one of the below options by clicking here .
We will be discussing this transition directly with the users that attend our Synergy User Conference at the end of June. We will be offering a presentation on eCommerce and we will have representatives at the exhibit booth to handle your questions. In the meantime, please reach out to your partner to help determine your next steps.

How staging environments protect your ecommerce launchLaunching a new ecommerce platform involves much more than publishing product pages and connecting a payment gateway. Store data, inventory rules, customer accounts, shipping rates, promotions, analytics, and operational workflows must work together without disrupting live sales. A staging environment provides a private version of the store where those interactions can be tested safely. Learn more about Drinkware.html. Using staging environments to test your new ecommerce platform is especially important during a platform migration. A business moving from NCR Retail Online to an alternative such as Magento or WooCommerce through an NCR Counterpoint partner may need to preserve years of catalog, order, and customer information while changing the technology behind the storefront. A well-managed staging site turns launch preparation into a controlled process. Teams can identify defects, confirm business requirements, and rehearse the release before customers encounter broken checkout flows or inaccurate stock levels. Create a realistic copy of the storeStaging should resemble production closely enough to reveal problems that a local development site may miss. Reproduce the storefront theme, product structure, tax settings, shipping zones, payment configuration, user roles, search behavior, and key integrations. Use representative data rather than a few sample products, because large catalogs often expose performance and filtering issues. Sensitive information requires special handling. Anonymize customer names, addresses, phone numbers, and payment-related records before copying data into staging. Disable live email delivery and connect payment gateways in sandbox mode. If the platform supports masked databases or controlled data exports, include those safeguards in the migration procedure. The catalog should also reflect real merchandising conditions. For example, a retailer selling drinkware can use a representative drinkware product page to verify image quality, variant selection, pricing, availability, structured data, and mobile presentation. Testing only generic placeholder products may hide issues with dimensions, attributes, or multiple images. Define acceptance criteria before testingA staging project needs measurable pass conditions. “The site looks right” is too vague to guide a release decision. Write down the expected result for each important workflow, including catalog imports, stock updates, discount rules, checkout, refunds, order exports, customer registration, and transactional notifications. Separate functional requirements from operational requirements. Functional checks confirm that a shopper can find an item, add it to the basket, pay, and receive an order confirmation. Operational checks confirm that the order reaches the correct fulfillment process, inventory is reduced accurately, and staff can manage the transaction from the business system. Include edge cases in the test plan. Try an out-of-stock item, a coupon with an expiry date, a split shipment, a failed payment, a tax-exempt customer, a returned product, and a cart containing items from different fulfillment locations. These scenarios often uncover integration gaps that ordinary happy-path testing will not reveal. Test data, integrations, and inventory synchronizationA new ecommerce platform is part of a wider retail system. Test connections to point-of-sale software, inventory services, accounting tools, shipping carriers, email platforms, search providers, fraud screening, and analytics. Confirm the direction and timing of every data exchange. An inventory update that works manually may fail when thousands of records are processed in an automated batch. Inventory synchronization deserves its own test cycle. Compare quantities in the source system, staging catalog, and order management workflow after purchases, cancellations, returns, adjustments, and transfers. Check how the platform handles unavailable products, backorders, discontinued SKUs, bundles, and products with multiple locations. Retail teams leaving NCR Retail Online should pay particular attention to automation during the transition. The principles discussed in automated operations apply directly to staging: repetitive tasks need observable, testable workflows rather than assumptions that data will move correctly on launch day.
Compare staging behavior with production expectationsA staging environment should use production-like hosting, caching, search indexes, and configuration wherever possible. If staging runs on weaker infrastructure or uses different extensions, test results may be misleading. Record these differences so the team knows which findings require additional validation after deployment. Run baseline measurements for page response time, database queries, image loading, search results, and checkout completion. Then repeat them after importing the full catalog and enabling integrations. Large product collections, complex promotions, and layered navigation can change performance significantly compared with a small development dataset. The storefront also needs cross-device and cross-browser checks. Verify menus, filters, product galleries, forms, accessibility behavior, and checkout on common desktop and mobile combinations. Review the complete buying journey with slow connections and smaller screens, since a technically valid page can still create friction for shoppers. Rehearse the release and the rollbackA staging environment becomes more valuable when it mirrors the actual deployment sequence. Practice database migration, media transfer, DNS or domain changes, search indexing, cache warming, extension activation, and integration credentials. Measure each step and assign an owner so launch-day work does not depend on informal knowledge. Create a cutover checklist with decision points. Specify when the old store stops accepting changes, how final orders are reconciled, when the last data synchronization runs, and who approves the new site. Keep a documented rollback plan that explains how to restore the previous storefront if orders, stock, or payments behave unexpectedly. Conduct at least one full dress rehearsal using a copy of the final migration package. Include customer service and fulfillment staff, not just developers. They can identify missing order fields, confusing administration screens, or notification problems that technical tests may overlook. Make testing repeatable across every releaseStaging should not be treated as a one-time migration room. After launch, use it to test theme changes, extensions, pricing updates, integrations, and platform upgrades before they reach customers. Store test cases in a shared system, record expected outcomes, and retain evidence for failed and passed checks. Automated tests can cover recurring tasks such as product imports, checkout calculations, API responses, stock changes, and order status updates. Manual exploratory testing remains important for visual quality and unusual customer behavior, but automation reduces the chance that routine regression checks will be skipped. Use these practices to keep the environment reliable:
A disciplined staging process reduces launch risk without slowing the business unnecessarily. It gives merchandising, operations, customer service, and technical teams a shared place to verify that the new platform supports real retail work. Set up a production-like staging environment, define the workflows that must pass, and schedule a full release rehearsal before switching platforms. With those controls in place, your ecommerce team can move to its new store with clearer evidence, safer data handling, and greater confidence in every customer order. |
