We have been analyzing the NCR Retail Online (NRO) business and our NCR Industry Solutions Board, an internal team that helps set strategy, has decided to set the NRO product to End of Life on March 31, 2018 . The CPOnline Product was also recently announced with an end of life date of September 30th, 2017 . The End of Life terms indicate that all current customers will need to be transitioned off their respective product and the servers turned off by 9/30/17 (CPO) & 3/31/18 (NRO) . Your NCR Counterpoint business partner has been notified of this decision in advance and has started taking steps to help you transition your eCommerce solution.

Building a reliable email stack after an NCR migration

NCR Retail Online was designed to connect ecommerce activity with retail inventory and business management systems. Since the platform has been discontinued, merchants moving to alternatives such as Magento or WooCommerce through NCR Counterpoint partners must also reconsider how email marketing fits into the new technology environment.

Integrating email marketing tools after migrating from NCR is more than installing an app and importing a subscriber list. Customer records, product data, order events, consent preferences, discount rules, and tracking parameters all need to remain consistent across the new storefront and marketing platform.

A carefully planned transition can preserve valuable customer relationships while creating better opportunities for segmentation and automation. It can also prevent common problems such as duplicate contacts, broken welcome sequences, inaccurate product recommendations, and messages sent without valid permission.

Why the migration changes email marketing

An ecommerce migration changes the source of truth for many events that email campaigns depend on. A completed order, abandoned cart, refunded purchase, customer account update, and product view may now be recorded by a different platform or passed through a different integration. If those events are not mapped correctly, automations may stop working or trigger at the wrong time.

The storefront, customer relationship management system, point-of-sale software, and email service provider should therefore be treated as one connected ecosystem. Magento and WooCommerce offer broad integration choices, but the exact setup depends on the NCR Counterpoint partner, extensions, middleware, payment tools, and inventory configuration used by the retailer.

Before the migration goes live, document every email process currently in use. Include newsletters, receipts, loyalty messages, replenishment reminders, cart recovery, post-purchase campaigns, and internal notifications. This inventory provides a practical checklist for rebuilding customer communications rather than assuming that an existing plugin has transferred everything automatically.

Prepare customer and product data

Begin with a field-level data audit. Compare the old NCR export with the destination store and email platform, checking email addresses, names, phone numbers, purchase dates, order values, product categories, loyalty identifiers, and marketing consent. Decide which system owns each field and establish rules for resolving conflicts.

Suppression data deserves special attention. Unsubscribed contacts, hard bounces, spam complaints, and customers who requested deletion must not be reactivated during an import. Preserve timestamps and consent sources where possible, and retain a clear record of how each contact entered the marketing database. A clean import is more valuable than a large but unreliable list.

Product taxonomy also affects personalization. Map old categories and SKUs to the new catalog so that a customer who purchased cookware, for example, can receive relevant follow-up content. A retailer could use a gifts under $50 collection in seasonal campaigns, provided the catalog feed sends accurate product names, prices, availability, and landing-page links.

Connect the right marketing tools

Select an email service provider that supports the new commerce platform and the retailer’s operational requirements. Important capabilities include real-time event syncing, customer segmentation, dynamic product blocks, transactional email support, consent management, reporting, and an API or native connector that can be maintained over time.

Avoid choosing an integration based solely on the number of advertised features. Confirm how quickly order events are transmitted, whether refunds and cancellations are supported, how guest checkouts are handled, and whether product inventory can suppress unavailable items. For stores with complex operations, middleware may provide better control than a collection of disconnected extensions.

A catalog-driven email program can feature useful merchandising groups such as kitchen accessories, but only when the feed is reliable. Test image URLs, product variants, sale prices, stock status, tax display, and tracking links before activating a campaign. A broken product block can damage confidence faster than a plain text message.

Integration area What to verify Migration risk
Customer records Field mapping, duplicate handling, consent status Contacts split across systems
Order events Purchases, refunds, cancellations, fulfillment Incorrect post-purchase messages
Product feed Prices, stock, categories, images, URLs Out-of-stock recommendations
Cart activity Session identity and event timing Abandoned-cart gaps
Analytics UTM tags, revenue attribution, device tracking Unclear campaign performance
Transactional email Receipts, shipping notices, password resets Delayed or duplicated service messages

Rebuild useful customer journeys

Start with essential lifecycle automation rather than launching every old campaign at once. A welcome series, abandoned-cart flow, order confirmation, shipping update, post-purchase message, and re-engagement sequence usually provide the greatest immediate value. Each journey should have a clear trigger, audience rule, delay, suppression condition, and exit event.

Use behavioral data to make messages relevant without becoming excessive. A customer who browsed dining products may respond to content about dining and entertaining, while someone who recently bought a gift may need a different follow-up sequence. Category, purchase frequency, average order value, location, and engagement level can support useful segments.

Frequency controls are essential during the transition. A person may receive a promotional newsletter, a cart reminder, and a loyalty message within the same day if all systems operate independently. Establish a central priority system and global limits so transactional messages remain timely while promotional communication stays manageable.

Protect deliverability and customer trust

A platform migration is a good time to review sender authentication. Configure SPF, DKIM, and DMARC for the sending domain, then verify that the email service provider signs messages correctly. Use a recognizable from-name, a monitored reply address, and a consistent brand identity across newsletters and automated messages.

Warm up a new sending infrastructure gradually if the domain or dedicated IP is changing. Begin with engaged customers, monitor bounces and complaints, and expand volume only when performance remains stable. Do not use the migration as an opportunity to mail dormant contacts who have not meaningfully engaged for years.

Consent language should match the retailer’s actual practices and applicable privacy requirements. Make unsubscribe controls easy to find, honor suppression requests promptly, and separate transactional permission from promotional permission. Customer trust depends on predictable communication, especially when a familiar retail platform has recently changed behind the scenes.

Test reporting before scaling campaigns

Create a staging environment or limited pilot segment where possible. Place test orders using different customer types, apply coupons, abandon carts, request refunds, and trigger account changes. Confirm that the correct events reach the email platform once, with the correct values and timestamps.

Review analytics from both sides of the integration. Compare email-attributed revenue with order records in Magento, WooCommerce, or the connected business system. Check whether UTM parameters survive redirects, whether mobile and desktop links work, and whether revenue is assigned to the correct campaign when multiple messages influence one purchase.

Set baseline metrics before judging the new system. Delivery rate, click rate, conversion rate, unsubscribe rate, complaint rate, revenue per recipient, and automation completion rate can reveal different problems. A strong open rate with weak sales may indicate an offer or landing-page issue, while high clicks with low conversion may point to catalog, pricing, checkout, or tracking errors.

Priorities for the first 30 days

The first month should focus on stability, visibility, and a small number of dependable customer experiences. Assign an owner for data quality, an owner for campaign content, and an owner for technical integrations. Keep a change log so the team can connect performance shifts to catalog updates, plugin changes, or configuration decisions.

Use this short operating checklist:

  • Export and validate subscriber, suppression, consent, order, and product data before importing it.
  • Confirm that customer, cart, purchase, refund, and inventory events sync correctly.
  • Authenticate the sending domain and warm up new infrastructure with engaged contacts.
  • Rebuild essential lifecycle flows before expanding into advanced personalization.
  • Compare email revenue and order records weekly during the first migration cycle.

Once core messages are stable, add more sophisticated programs such as replenishment reminders, VIP segments, win-back campaigns, and recommendations based on category affinity. Keep each addition measurable, with a defined audience, business goal, and test period.

A successful migration creates a foundation for more responsive retail marketing. By connecting clean customer data, dependable commerce events, permission-aware sending, and accurate reporting, merchants can move beyond simply replacing NCR Retail Online and build an email program that supports repeat purchases and long-term loyalty.

Start by auditing the current export and drawing the event flow from storefront to inbox. Then work with the NCR Counterpoint partner and chosen email provider to validate the connection in a controlled pilot before sending to the full customer base.

After you have completed your move to a new eCommerce platform, don’t forget to submit the Store Closure Request form to close your NRO site and cancel your billing subscription.
