We have been analyzing the NCR Retail Online (NRO) business and our NCR Industry Solutions Board, an internal team that helps set strategy, has decided to set the NRO product to End of Life on March 31, 2018 . The CPOnline Product was also recently announced with an end of life date of September 30th, 2017 . The End of Life terms indicate that all current customers will need to be transitioned off their respective product and the servers turned off by 9/30/17 (CPO) & 3/31/18 (NRO) . Your NCR Counterpoint business partner has been notified of this decision in advance and has started taking steps to help you transition your eCommerce solution.

Migrating Abandoned Cart Recovery Data from NCR to a New Provider

When an ecommerce platform is retired, abandoned-cart records can be easy to overlook. Product catalogues, customer accounts and order history usually receive attention first, while recovery events, consent records and message performance data remain buried in the old system. For retailers moving away from NCR Retail Online, that oversight can reduce revenue and disrupt a familiar customer journey.

A careful migration preserves the information required to restart cart reminders, rebuild useful audience segments and measure results accurately. The work involves more than exporting a list of email addresses. Australian retailers also need to account for privacy obligations, Australian Eastern Time, GST-inclusive pricing, local delivery expectations and the systems connected to their physical stores.

Define The Data Worth Keeping

Begin by documenting every abandoned-cart field available in NCR. Useful records may include customer name, email address, mobile number, cart contents, product identifiers, quantities, cart value, currency, creation time, last activity, recovery status and the messages already sent. Capture the relationship between a cart and its customer rather than exporting isolated rows that lose their context.

Separate active recovery opportunities from historical reporting data. A cart created yesterday may still qualify for a reminder, while a cart from two years ago is generally more valuable as an aggregate performance record. Preserve campaign names, send dates, delivery status, opens, clicks, recovered orders and revenue where available. This gives the new provider enough information to avoid repeating an offer or misrepresenting past results.

Retailers should also record the source of each field and its intended use. A mobile number collected for delivery updates should not automatically become permission for promotional SMS messages. This distinction is particularly important under the Australian Privacy Act and the Spam Act, where consent, purpose and unsubscribe handling need to remain clear.

Export Records Before Access Ends

Confirm the export options while the NCR environment is still available. Depending on the account configuration, information may be downloadable through reports, scheduled exports, API access or assistance from an NCR Counterpoint partner. The NCR retail platform information is useful background when identifying which ecommerce and inventory functions were part of the previous setup.

Request exports in a durable format such as CSV or JSON, and save the original files without editing them. Keep a second working copy for cleaning and transformation. Record the export date, time zone, filters applied and any known limitations, such as a report that includes only carts associated with identified customers.

Check whether product IDs in cart data match the identifiers used by the new store. An item may have had separate codes for online sales, point-of-sale transactions and supplier replenishment. This issue can affect retailers with locations in Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane, where stock may be shared between a web shop and multiple stores.

Clean And Map The Dataset

Create a field-mapping document before importing anything. It should show the NCR field, its new-provider equivalent, the conversion rule and the treatment of missing values. For example, a cart timestamp might need conversion from local store time to UTC, while a product code may require a lookup against the new catalogue.

Deduplicate customer profiles using a controlled method. Email address is often the primary key, but it is not always sufficient because customers can use different addresses for online purchases and loyalty accounts. Avoid merging records solely because names or delivery addresses look similar. An incorrect merge can expose purchase information to the wrong person or send a recovery message to an unrelated customer.

Normalise telephone numbers into an Australian format, validate email addresses and remove test accounts. Preserve the original customer identifier in a separate reference field so support staff can investigate historical activity. Cart values should also be checked for cents, currency and GST treatment, since Australian shoppers generally expect prices displayed in an ecommerce store to include GST.

Rebuild Consent And Suppression Rules

Abandoned-cart automation should carry across opt-in status, consent source, consent date and communication preferences wherever those records exist. A customer who opted out of marketing messages must not re-enter a recovery sequence simply because their cart was imported into a new platform. Maintain global suppression lists outside the campaign tool as an additional safeguard during the transition.

Review the wording and timing of the old messages. A reminder email can be different from a promotional email, but the distinction should be clear in the new provider’s configuration. Include a working unsubscribe mechanism, an identifiable sender and accurate business details. SMS recovery requires separate care because message volume, sender identification and unsubscribe processes are visible to Australian regulators and customers.

Do not import every historic cart into an active campaign by default. A safer approach is to load old activity for reporting, then activate only recent carts that meet the new provider’s consent and timing rules. This prevents a sudden burst of stale messages to people who have already purchased, changed their preferences or abandoned the address they once used.

Match Products, Prices And Stock

A recovery message is persuasive only when its contents are accurate. Match each imported line item to the new catalogue, including variant, size, colour, image, URL and current price. If a product has been discontinued or replaced, configure a useful alternative rather than displaying a broken link.

Stock status needs particular attention when online inventory synchronises with stores. A customer in Perth may see an item available online while the only unit is held at a shop in Adelaide, or a popular product may sell out during a weekend promotion. Recovery flows should check live availability at send time and remove unavailable products when necessary.

Category history can also help rebuild relevant segments. For instance, shoppers who abandoned kitchen equipment may respond differently from those who left fashion items in a cart. Existing catalogue context, such as the kitchen accessories range, can help teams understand how older product groupings were presented before recreating them in Magento, WooCommerce or another provider.

Recreate Automation And Measurement

Map the old sequence step by step: trigger, waiting period, message content, discount logic, exit conditions and channel. Common flows include a first reminder after a few hours, a second message after a day and a final message after several days. The exact schedule should reflect Australian shopping habits, delivery promises and the retailer’s customer service capacity.

Use local time rules carefully. A message scheduled for 9:00 am should reach customers according to the relevant Australian time zone, not the server location. This matters for businesses serving customers across Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth, particularly during daylight-saving changes that do not affect every state in the same way.

Rebuild conversion tracking with consistent definitions. Decide whether a recovered cart means a purchase within a set attribution window, and preserve the distinction between revenue from the original cart and revenue from a later order. Apply exclusions for cancelled orders, refunds and test transactions. If the business uses a loyalty programme or marketplace channel, ensure those orders are not counted twice.

Test The New Recovery Journey

Use a small test group before importing the full dataset. Create test carts with different products, quantities, discounts and delivery addresses, then confirm that the messages display correctly on mobile and desktop. Check that links restore the intended cart, prices remain accurate and the checkout recognises the customer’s delivery and payment options.

Test edge cases that can cause serious customer confusion. A cart should exit the sequence after a successful purchase, even if the order is placed through a store. A customer who empties the cart should not receive the old product list. Unsubscribed contacts must remain suppressed, and a failed payment should follow the correct service workflow rather than being treated as a fresh abandoned cart.

Run deliverability checks with Australian email domains and review the sender reputation of the new provider. Confirm SPF, DKIM and DMARC records, tracking consent settings and bounce handling. Keep the NCR export read-only until the new flows have completed a controlled trial and the business has verified that key reports reconcile.

Manage The Cutover And Records

Choose a cutover window that avoids major campaigns, public holidays and peak trading periods such as Boxing Day sales. Pause or limit the old recovery automation, perform a final incremental export and import only records changed since the first migration. This reduces duplicate messages and keeps the gap between systems manageable.

Tell staff which platform is authoritative after the switch. Customer service teams may need access to cart references, message history and suppression status when responding to enquiries. Document the new workflow, field mappings and exception handling in an internal knowledge base. A retailer moving to Magento can also review practical guidance on Magento migration pitfalls before finalising connected systems.

Keep migration logs, consent evidence and export files according to the organisation’s retention policy. Campaign teams can schedule validation, suppression reviews and reporting checks using a content scheduling guide, especially when several stores or seasonal campaigns share the same calendar. After launch, compare cart volume, recovery rate, unsubscribe rate, bounce rate and attributed revenue with the old baseline.

The practical takeaway is to treat abandoned-cart information as a governed customer dataset: export it intact, map it carefully, preserve consent, test every trigger and activate only records that remain timely and permission-compliant.

After you have completed your move to a new eCommerce platform, don’t forget to submit the Store Closure Request form to close your NRO site and cancel your billing subscription.
