We have been analyzing the NCR Retail Online (NRO) business and our NCR Industry Solutions Board, an internal team that helps set strategy, has decided to set the NRO product to End of Life on March 31, 2018 . The CPOnline Product was also recently announced with an end of life date of September 30th, 2017 . The End of Life terms indicate that all current customers will need to be transitioned off their respective product and the servers turned off by 9/30/17 (CPO) & 3/31/18 (NRO) . Your NCR Counterpoint business partner has been notified of this decision in advance and has started taking steps to help you transition your eCommerce solution.

Recreating NCR’s Product Review Stars and Comment Sections in Magento

When NCR Retail Online was discontinued, retailers using its connected ecommerce and inventory tools had to reassess how their online shops handled product discovery, customer feedback and trust signals. Magento offers a practical replacement for the familiar star ratings and comment areas, provided the experience is planned around current product data rather than copied screen by screen.

For Australian merchants, the job involves more than installing a review extension. A useful implementation must display prices in Australian dollars, support GST-inclusive pricing, work with metro and regional delivery expectations, and give shoppers confidence that feedback is genuine. It should also preserve valuable customer comments during the move from the previous platform.

Mapping The Existing Review Experience

Start by documenting how reviews worked in the old NCR storefront. Record whether stars appeared on category cards, search results, product pages and promotional landing pages. Note the rating scale, whether a customer could submit a review without signing in, and how comments were approved, edited or removed.

Capture the surrounding content as well. A review may have included a headline, nickname, purchase date, product variant, image or staff response. Exporting the text alone can make historical feedback appear incomplete. If a retailer sells seasonal products, keep the connection between each review and the correct SKU, size, colour or pack quantity.

Magento’s native review functionality can provide a sound base for star ratings, review titles, body text and customer identities. Retailers needing verified-purchase labels, photo uploads, review reminders, voting or advanced filtering may need a compatible Magento extension. The key is to select a tool that stores data in a portable format and does not create unnecessary dependence on a single vendor.

Building Familiar Stars And Comments

A Magento product page should make the rating summary easy to find near the product name and price. Show the average score, total number of reviews and a clear link to the comment area. A five-star graphic is familiar to Australian shoppers, but it should have accessible text such as “4.6 out of 5 from 38 reviews” for screen readers and customers using assistive technology.

The submission form should ask for only information that serves a clear purpose. A title, comment, rating and display name are usually enough. Optional fields can include pros, cons, images and product use case. Avoid making customers create a lengthy account profile merely to leave feedback, especially for quick purchases such as accessories or replenishment items.

Review prompts should be timed around realistic product use. A customer buying a dress from a for her gifts collection may need a few days to assess fit, while someone purchasing food equipment may need several weeks. Automated email flows can send a first request after delivery, followed by one reminder, without flooding the customer’s inbox.

Comparing Magento Review Approaches

The right implementation depends on catalogue size, migration requirements and how much control the retailer wants over moderation. A small independent shop in Hobart may need a straightforward native setup, while a multi-store operation across Sydney, Brisbane and Perth may require workflow controls and detailed reporting.

Approach Suitable For Main Strengths Watch Points
Magento native reviews Small to mid-sized catalogues Simple setup, familiar administration, low extra cost Limited media, automation and analytics
Specialist review extension Stores seeking richer customer content Verified purchases, photos, reminders and filters Compatibility, licensing and data portability
External review platform Brands needing broad reputation management Review syndication, advanced moderation and reporting Ongoing fees, integration work and third-party dependency
Custom Magento module Complex multi-store requirements Precise design, rules and migration control Higher development and maintenance costs

A blended approach is often sensible. Native Magento reviews can handle basic comments, while a carefully selected extension adds verified-purchase indicators, structured responses and post-purchase emails. Before committing, test the solution on the exact Magento version, theme, payment flow and search configuration used by the store.

A review tool should also behave properly on mobile devices. Many Australian customers browse during a commute on Sydney trains, between appointments or after work on a phone. The rating summary, “write a review” control and existing comments should load quickly without pushing product information far below the fold.

Adapting The Store For Australia

Australian presentation details affect whether reviews feel credible. Display prices in AUD and make it clear whether GST is included, particularly for business customers comparing wholesale-style products. Delivery comments should distinguish metro areas from regional and remote destinations, because an experience in inner Melbourne may differ sharply from one in rural Queensland or Western Australia.

Product attributes also need local language and context. Use “size 10” rather than relying on overseas sizing conventions, explain whether electrical products use Australian plugs, and show measurements in metric units. For food, wine and speciality goods, an item’s review may mention vintage, flavour, serving size or storage. A retailer selling a food and wine range should make sure those details remain tied to the relevant product version.

The moderation policy should account for Australian Consumer Law. Genuine negative feedback should not be removed simply because it is unfavourable, while fake reviews, abusive material, personal information and irrelevant promotions can be rejected. Publish a short policy explaining what is moderated, why a review may be withheld and how customers can report a concern.

Use a calm, recognisable tone in review requests. Phrases such as “Tell us how it went” or “How did you find it?” sound natural locally without forcing slang. “Good on ya” might suit a casual brand, but a medical, financial or premium retailer will usually need a more restrained voice.

Migrating Comments Safely

Treat historical review migration as a data project rather than a copy-and-paste exercise. Build a mapping between the old product identifier and the Magento SKU, then validate titles, variants, ratings, dates and author names before importing. Products that have been discontinued should not receive reviews for a replacement item unless the relationship is genuinely clear.

Preserve the original submission date where possible, because a comment from 2019 should not look like a new endorsement. If customer email addresses were stored in the old system, do not expose them in the storefront. Display a suitable nickname or anonymised name, and review the permission basis for using any uploaded customer image.

Migration also affects domains, URLs and search visibility. Create redirects from old product and review-related paths, update XML sitemaps and check canonical tags. Retailers managing a wider platform change can consult a practical domain migration guide when reviewing registrar, DNS and ownership details. The specific settings will vary, but the principle is the same: control the domain before changing the storefront.

Never import untrusted HTML directly into review fields. Strip scripts, unsafe tags and tracking fragments, then encode displayed content. Run a malware scan on uploaded images and limit permitted file types and sizes. Staff accounts should use individual logins with least-privilege permissions, multi-factor authentication and an audit trail for approval or deletion actions.

Testing Trust, Accessibility And Security

Before launch, test the full review journey as a customer. Submit a review on a mobile handset, trigger the approval workflow, reject a prohibited comment and confirm that the resulting status is communicated correctly. Check that star icons have meaningful accessible labels and that keyboard users can reach every form control in a logical order.

Test edge cases involving refunds, guest checkout and product changes. A verified-purchase label should not be granted merely because someone knows a product URL. If a product has several configurations, make sure the review appears against the correct parent or child item. Check pagination and sorting when a popular product has hundreds of comments.

Security testing should include permissions around moderation, administration and customer data. A retailer dealing with confidential business documents may also review guidance on recovering a PDF owner password, although ecommerce credentials and review administration should be managed through Magento’s own secure account controls. Keep extensions patched, remove unused modules and monitor failed login attempts.

Performance matters because review widgets can add JavaScript, images and API calls. Use lazy loading for photos, cache rating summaries where appropriate and check Core Web Vitals on real mobile connections. Confirm that structured data describes genuine visible reviews and does not claim ratings for products that have no displayed feedback.

Measuring The New Review Programme

After launch, measure whether the new experience helps shoppers make decisions. Track review submission rate, approval time, percentage of verified purchases, average rating, review-assisted conversion and the number of product pages with no feedback. Segment results by device, category and customer location to see whether regional buyers behave differently from metro customers.

Do not treat the average star score as the only success measure. Comment detail can reveal recurring sizing issues, packaging damage, delivery problems or unexpected product strengths. Route useful themes to merchandising, fulfilment and customer service teams, while keeping personal information out of internal reports wherever it is unnecessary.

Create a regular maintenance rhythm. Review extension updates in a staging environment, sample moderated comments, check redirects and confirm that imported historical reviews remain attached to live SKUs. When products are merged, retired or replaced, record the decision so future catalogue updates do not break the review history.

The immediate next step is to export the current NCR review fields and create a SKU-by-SKU mapping sheet before selecting a Magento review module.

After you have completed your move to a new eCommerce platform, don’t forget to submit the Store Closure Request form to close your NRO site and cancel your billing subscription.
