We have been analyzing the NCR Retail Online (NRO) business and our NCR Industry Solutions Board, an internal team that helps set strategy, has decided to set the NRO product to End of Life on March 31, 2018 . The CPOnline Product was also recently announced with an end of life date of September 30th, 2017 . The End of Life terms indicate that all current customers will need to be transitioned off their respective product and the servers turned off by 9/30/17 (CPO) & 3/31/18 (NRO) . Your NCR Counterpoint business partner has been notified of this decision in advance and has started taking steps to help you transition your eCommerce solution.

Recreating NCR tiered pricing in Magento with customer groups

Recreating NCR’s tiered customer pricing in Magento using customer groups starts with translating the commercial model, not copying the storefront. NCR Retail Online has been discontinued, and merchants moving through its ecosystem are pointed toward choosing a Counterpoint partner to reach platforms such as Magento or WooCommerce. A successful rebuild must preserve who qualifies for each price, how it is calculated and where it overrides a standard promotion.

For Australian retailers, the model must fit familiar market conventions. Prices are generally quoted in Australian dollars, GST is 10%, and consumer-facing prices should be presented clearly under Australian Consumer Law. Trade buyers may ask for a quote, provide an ABN and expect a tax invoice, while freight can differ sharply between metro postcodes around Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane or Perth and regional centres. These conditions belong in the pricing test plan.

Translate legacy price levels into Magento groups

Begin with a legacy price audit. Export each NCR customer tier, the customer IDs assigned to it, the affected products, price type, minimum quantity, currency, tax treatment and start or end date. Include negotiated exceptions such as a hospitality contract or a key account. The export becomes the reconciliation baseline used throughout design, migration and post-launch testing.

Map stable commercial levels to named Magento customer groups, for example Standard, Trade, Trade Plus and Key Account. Do not create a group for every customer unless truly necessary. Magento normally gives one customer one group, so multi-user company accounts need careful handling: Adobe Commerce company features or an extension may be needed if several staff members must share one company price.

Define whether each tier represents a fixed amount, a percentage, a price book or a negotiated contract. Keep these distinctions explicit because a fixed customer-group price is simpler than conditional pricing based on volume, order value, credit status or contract expiry. This step prevents a tidy-looking catalogue from hiding rules that the sales team applies every day.

Configure group pricing and tax correctly

Create groups in Magento Admin under Stores > Customers > Customer Groups, then assign each to the relevant websites. Where your Magento release supports it, set Stores > Configuration > Catalog > Price > Price Scope to Customer Group. Price scope changes can affect existing catalogue values, so make that decision before importing prices and test the behaviour in a non-production environment.

Enter or import customer-group prices through the product pricing and advanced pricing facilities available in your release. For example, a product with a normal AUD price of $100 might show $92 to Trade members while remaining $100 for Standard customers. Confirm whether values are entered with or without GST; a $92 exclusive price becomes $101.20 at 10% GST. Tax exemption is a separate customer setting, not an automatic benefit of trade membership.

Group pricing can reveal sensitive account discounts, so secure the admin, import accounts and customer records with the same care as payment data. Enforce HTTPS, MFA for staff and least-privilege access. A concise SSL certificate guide explains encryption and certificate validation, while Magento roles should control who may view or change wholesale prices.

Load prices without creating pricing drift

Build the initial price matrix as a version-controlled file keyed by product SKU, website and customer-group identifier. Load it through a supported Magento import, an official extension or a reviewed integration; avoid direct database edits. Include non-purchasable, disabled and bundle products in test cases, because catalogue visibility rules can make an imported price look as though it did not save.

Decide which system owns each price. If NCR Counterpoint or an ERP still holds the price book, publish customer-group prices from that source on a schedule and log every change. If Magento is the master, send approved prices back to the ERP or POS while keeping inventory synchronization separate. Price distribution and stock availability solve different retail problems and should not be tangled together.

After each import, validate representative SKUs against the approved matrix, reindex the affected products and test the storefront as a member of each group. Clear only the relevant cache rather than treating a full cache flush as routine maintenance. Where a price is calculated continuously, record the inputs, result and rule version so support staff can explain the amount on an invoice.

Fit customer rules to Australian buying patterns

Use group membership for commercial eligibility: trade status, account approval, location or negotiated segment. Australian tax treatment remains separate. A GST-registered buyer with an ABN may still need GST charged and a valid tax invoice unless a tax exemption is properly configured. That distinction prevents a wholesale discount from being confused with a tax outcome and keeps reconciliation clean.

Document how group prices interact with catalogue price rules, special prices, cart discounts and free-shipping thresholds. Magento behaviour varies by release and configuration, and overlapping promotions can alter the final amount. Run a checkout matrix for a Standard customer, a Trade customer and a Key Account customer, including postage to a metro postcode and a regional Australian destination.

Merchandising can sit alongside tiered pricing. Retailers offering gifts can review personalised gifting options for ideas, while engraving fees, message charges or made-to-order products still need a defined price and inventory treatment. Model a fixed surcharge as a price adjustment, or keep the amount in a quote where labour and delivery vary by location.

Recommendations for a reliable Magento rollout

Before implementation, separate business requirements from software features and keep the controls simple enough for store and finance teams to follow:

  • Export and reconcile every legacy price tier, customer assignment and written exception.
  • Give each Magento customer group a business-readable name and one documented purpose.
  • Assign websites and catalogue price scope deliberately before loading prices.
  • Define AUD rounding, 10% GST, tax exemptions and promotion stacking in writing.
  • Version-control price files and use supported imports or APIs instead of direct database changes.
  • Test the catalogue, cart, checkout, invoice, credit and reordering flow for every group.
  • Record each price change with an approver, timestamp and reason, then monitor indexing.

These controls support several implementation patterns, each suited to a different level of pricing complexity:

Pricing approach Best suited to Main advantage Main limitation
Customer-group price Stable account tiers such as Standard, Trade and VIP Clear catalogue prices and simple audits Limited support for dates, quantities and contracts
Catalogue price rule Temporary group discounts Quick promotional changes Rules can stack and become difficult to trace
Price-list extension Customer lists, quantity breaks or effective dates Supports richer trade pricing Adds licensing, mapping and governance work
Custom ERP pricing service Contract pricing tied to live ERP data One authoritative calculation across channels Higher integration and monitoring cost

For many Australian wholesalers replacing NCR, native customer-group prices are sufficient for a few stable tiers. If pricing depends on order value, volume, expiry or credit standing, budget for a supported price-list extension or integration rather than forcing the logic into overlapping catalogue rules. Magento is the stronger fit when one rule set must serve the web store, B2B accounts, APIs and operational reporting.

Launch and govern the new pricing model

Run a staged cutover with a read-only copy of the legacy tier list. Rehearse a group switch using real test accounts in Sydney and regional Western Australia, verify invoices and credit documents, and keep an immediate rollback to the prior price source. Go live only after finance, sales and customer-service teams have signed off the same sample calculations.

After launch, monitor price-change logs, catalogue-to-cart mismatches, indexing failures and requests for quote approval. Give customer-service teams a simple lookup showing the customer’s group, effective price and approver. Review exception requests monthly, especially around ABN changes, promotional campaigns and seasonal stock, then update the approved matrix rather than applying undocumented manual corrections.

The practical takeaway is to treat every NCR price level as a governed Magento customer group with one documented price, a named owner and a tested data path, so the Australian storefront, account teams and finance systems all arrive at the same amount.
