We have been analyzing the NCR Retail Online (NRO) business and our NCR Industry Solutions Board, an internal team that helps set strategy, has decided to set the NRO product to End of Life on March 31, 2018 . The CPOnline Product was also recently announced with an end of life date of September 30th, 2017 . The End of Life terms indicate that all current customers will need to be transitioned off their respective product and the servers turned off by 9/30/17 (CPO) & 3/31/18 (NRO) . Your NCR Counterpoint business partner has been notified of this decision in advance and has started taking steps to help you transition your eCommerce solution.

Setting Up Discount And Coupon Systems On Your New Platform

Moving from NCR Retail Online to a replacement ecommerce platform is a chance to rebuild promotions around the way your business operates today. Discount codes, automatic offers, loyalty incentives, and gift-related campaigns should support sales without creating inventory confusion or unexpected margin loss.

Magento and WooCommerce offer flexible tools for promotional pricing, although the exact setup depends on your extensions, payment configuration, catalog structure, and connection to NCR Counterpoint or another retail management system. A careful plan helps your team preserve familiar workflows while gaining better control over online offers.

The strongest coupon strategy begins with clear rules. Decide who qualifies, which products are included, how discounts interact, and what happens when an order is returned. These decisions should be documented before technical configuration starts.

Audit Your Existing Promotions

Begin by listing every discount currently used in the online store and in physical locations. Include percentage reductions, fixed-amount coupons, buy-one-get-one offers, free shipping codes, employee discounts, loyalty rewards, seasonal campaigns, and promotions tied to customer groups. Record the start and end dates, eligible products, redemption limits, and sales channels for each offer.

This audit often reveals overlapping rules that were difficult to see in the old system. A product may receive a sale price, a category discount, and a coupon reduction at the same time. Write down the intended result for each combination. If the outcome is unclear, simplify the promotion before recreating it.

Review historical performance as well. Identify codes with strong conversion rates, frequent misuse, high redemption volume, or poor profitability. Retain the offers that support your commercial goals and retire inactive codes rather than transferring unnecessary complexity to the new platform.

Define The Rules Before Building

A coupon system should express business policy in precise terms. For each promotion, define the customer segment, qualifying merchandise, minimum purchase value, discount type, maximum benefit, usage limit, and expiration date. Specify whether the offer applies before or after shipping charges and taxes, since this can affect both profitability and customer expectations.

Decide how discounts interact with clearance pricing, gift cards, loyalty points, and other coupons. Many retailers allow one promotional code per order but permit automatic product markdowns at the same time. Others block every combination to protect margins. The correct choice depends on your pricing model, but it must be consistent across checkout, receipts, and customer service procedures.

Consider the language customers will see. “Save 15% on full-price footwear” is easier to understand than a vague message such as “special savings apply.” Clear terms reduce abandoned carts and support requests. Your legal or compliance team should also review exclusions, expiration wording, and regional restrictions where appropriate.

Select The Right Promotion Tools

Magento can support detailed cart price rules, catalog price rules, customer groups, coupon codes, and extensions for advanced campaigns. It is a strong choice when your business needs complex segmentation, multiple storefronts, or extensive control over product and cart conditions. Configuration may require experienced developers, especially when discounts depend on custom attributes or several connected systems.

WooCommerce provides a simpler starting point for many retailers. Its core coupon functions cover percentage discounts, fixed cart or product reductions, free shipping, minimum spending, usage limits, and selected product categories. Additional plugins can add store credit, buy-one-get-one promotions, dynamic pricing, or loyalty rewards. Each extension should be assessed for compatibility with your theme, payment gateway, tax setup, and inventory connector.

The best platform is the one your staff can operate reliably. A technically powerful feature has little value if employees cannot explain it, troubleshoot it, or recognize when a promotion has been applied incorrectly. Include staff capability, support availability, integration quality, and total extension cost in the decision.

Requirement Magento WooCommerce
Basic percentage and fixed discounts Built in Built in
Advanced customer segmentation Strong native options Usually needs extensions
Complex catalog and cart conditions Highly configurable Available through plugins
Ease of setup for smaller teams More technical Generally more approachable
Multi-store promotion management Well suited Depends on extensions
Ongoing maintenance Often requires specialist support Plugin and update management required

Connect Discounts With Inventory

A promotion is successful only when stock data remains accurate. If an offer is designed to move slow-selling products, the ecommerce platform must receive current quantities from the retail inventory system. Otherwise, shoppers may purchase items that are unavailable, or a campaign may continue after the remaining stock has been reserved in a store.

Set rules for products with variations, bundles, kits, and serialized inventory. A discount on a parent product may need to apply differently to individual sizes or colors. Bundle promotions should also specify whether components are deducted separately and how returns restore inventory.

Test the synchronization process with realistic orders. Create a discounted purchase, confirm the correct stock reduction in the retail system, process a partial return, and verify that the inventory adjustment is reflected online. Repeat the test for cancellations, refunds, and orders containing both promotional and full-price items.

A platform transition also affects the people who approve and fulfill promotions. Use these prepare your staff materials to organize training around checkout behavior, order exceptions, customer service responses, and daily promotion checks.

Protect Margins And Prevent Abuse

Every discount should have a financial purpose. Calculate the expected gross margin after the offer, payment processing costs, shipping subsidies, fulfillment expenses, and likely returns. A free-shipping coupon may look modest but become expensive on heavy or low-value orders. Set minimum order values when necessary to keep the campaign commercially sound.

Coupon security also deserves attention. Use unique, difficult-to-guess codes for targeted offers, and avoid predictable patterns such as a simple month and percentage combination. Limit redemptions by customer, account, email address, or order where your platform permits. Monitor repeated attempts, unusual order velocity, and code sharing across unrelated customer accounts.

Check that discount codes cannot be applied to excluded products through URL manipulation, cart changes, or checkout timing. Test logged-in and guest purchases, mobile checkout, multiple currencies if supported, and orders placed through customer service. Security settings should protect promotions without creating unnecessary barriers for legitimate shoppers.

Build A Testing And Approval Routine

Create a promotion checklist that every campaign follows before publication. Assign responsibility for writing the offer, configuring the rule, checking the product list, approving the financial impact, and monitoring results. Separating these tasks reduces the chance that a single setup error reaches customers.

  • Confirm the start and end time in the store’s configured time zone.
  • Test eligible and excluded products in a clean browser session.
  • Verify minimum spend, usage limits, shipping terms, and tax behavior.
  • Check the discount on desktop, mobile, guest, and registered-customer checkout.
  • Record the final rule, approval date, owner, and planned removal date.

Use a staging environment whenever possible. Test the promotion alongside other active offers, sale prices, gift cards, and loyalty benefits. Save screenshots or test order numbers so the support team can quickly identify whether a customer’s checkout matches the approved configuration.

After launch, monitor redemption volume, average order value, gross margin, conversion rate, cancellation activity, and inventory movement. A campaign may need to be paused if demand exceeds available stock or if customers are combining rules in an unintended way.

Turn Promotions Into Customer Experiences

Discounts work best when they are connected to a broader merchandising plan. Use automatic markdowns for straightforward storewide or category events, while reserving coupon codes for email subscribers, first purchases, loyalty members, or carefully measured partner campaigns. This approach makes the customer benefit clear and gives your team better reporting.

Gift cards and seasonal gifting can add another layer to the promotional calendar. Before creating gift-focused offers, review your catalog, redemption process, delivery choices, and return policy. Relevant gift promotions can be paired with free shipping thresholds or accessory discounts, provided the rules clearly explain whether gift cards qualify for the offer.

Keep promotional messages consistent across the website, email, social channels, receipts, and store signage. If an online code is excluded from physical stores, say so prominently. If store associates can honor an online offer in person, give them a simple verification process and a clear record of when the campaign ends.

Once the new platform is configured, publish a small controlled promotion before attempting a major seasonal event. Review the complete order journey, from product page through fulfillment and refund. Then make the new discount and coupon system part of your routine merchandising calendar, with named owners, scheduled audits, and measurable targets. Build the rules carefully, test them with real retail scenarios, and launch promotions that your customers and staff can trust.

After you have completed your move to a new eCommerce platform, don’t forget to submit the Store Closure Request form to close your NRO site and cancel your billing subscription.
