We have been analyzing the NCR Retail Online (NRO) business and our NCR Industry Solutions Board, an internal team that helps set strategy, has decided to set the NRO product to End of Life on March 31, 2018 . The CPOnline Product was also recently announced with an end of life date of September 30th, 2017 . The End of Life terms indicate that all current customers will need to be transitioned off their respective product and the servers turned off by 9/30/17 (CPO) & 3/31/18 (NRO) . Your NCR Counterpoint business partner has been notified of this decision in advance and has started taking steps to help you transition your eCommerce solution.

Top Features to Look for in a Replacement for NCR Retail OnlineThe discontinuation of NCR Retail Online means retailers must find a dependable ecommerce platform that connects digital selling with store operations. A suitable replacement should do more than display products online. It should keep inventory, orders, customer records, payments, and fulfillment activity aligned across every sales channel. The best choice will depend on the retailer’s catalog size, business model, existing NCR Counterpoint setup, and plans for growth. Magento and WooCommerce are common alternatives, especially when implemented by experienced NCR Counterpoint partners, but the software must be evaluated against practical retail requirements rather than popularity alone. A strong platform can preserve the efficiencies retailers valued in NCR Retail Online while adding flexibility for modern commerce. The following capabilities deserve close attention during the selection and migration process. Reliable inventory synchronizationReal-time or near-real-time inventory synchronization should be the first consideration. Stock levels need to move accurately between the ecommerce storefront, point-of-sale system, warehouse, and purchasing records. Without this connection, customers may order unavailable products, while store staff waste time correcting discrepancies. Look for a replacement that supports centralized product data, location-level quantities, reserved stock, backorders, safety stock, and inventory adjustments. The system should also make it clear when an item is available for shipping, pickup, or transfer from another store. These controls are particularly valuable for retailers with multiple locations or a wide product range. Inventory synchronization is a technical process with direct customer-service consequences. The guidance on synchronizing online store inventory illustrates why scheduled updates, data mapping, and exception monitoring all matter when connecting an online shop to a retail management system. Flexible catalog and order managementA replacement platform should support the way the business actually sells. Essential catalog tools include product variations, bundles, kits, subscriptions where relevant, digital products, seasonal pricing, customer-specific pricing, and configurable attributes. Retailers should be able to organize categories and merchandising rules without relying on a developer for every adjustment. Order management also needs to extend beyond basic checkout. Staff should be able to edit orders, split shipments, process partial refunds, apply discounts, manage returns, and view the complete order history. Support for buy online, pick up in store and ship-from-store workflows can help physical locations become fulfillment assets rather than separate channels. The platform should maintain a single view of order status from payment through delivery or pickup. Automated notifications, shipment tracking, return authorization, and fraud review can reduce manual work while giving customers more reliable updates. Strong integrations for connected retailEcommerce software is most useful when it works as part of a broader technology ecosystem. Check whether the replacement integrates with the existing POS, accounting software, payment gateways, shipping providers, tax services, customer relationship tools, email marketing systems, and marketplace accounts. Integration quality matters as much as the number of available connectors. A platform should offer dependable APIs, webhooks, import and export tools, and clear documentation. It should also identify failed data exchanges rather than allowing errors to remain hidden until they affect a customer order or financial report. Retailers in specialized sectors may require industry-specific workflows. For example, a shop selling regulated or age-restricted products should confirm that the chosen platform can support appropriate checkout controls, product information, and fulfillment procedures. Resources focused on food and wine retail can help businesses assess whether a solution fits category-specific operational needs.
Security and operational resilienceSecurity should be assessed at the platform, integration, user, and hosting levels. Look for encrypted data transmission, secure payment processing, role-based permissions, multifactor authentication, audit logs, vulnerability management, and regular backups. The provider should explain how it responds to incidents and communicates with customers. Payment card compliance is important, but it is only one part of a secure retail environment. Staff accounts, customer profiles, order data, API credentials, and administrative actions all need protection. Limiting access by role can prevent unnecessary exposure while making it easier to investigate suspicious activity. Reliability deserves equal attention. Ask about service-level commitments, hosting architecture, backup frequency, disaster recovery, maintenance windows, and support response times. A storefront that loads slowly or becomes unavailable during a promotional event can create lost revenue and damage customer confidence. Customer experience and omnichannel toolsA replacement should provide a fast, accessible storefront on phones, tablets, and desktop computers. Important capabilities include site search, filtering, clear product information, guest checkout, saved carts, multiple payment methods, accessible design, and transparent shipping costs. These features should be manageable without compromising page speed. Omnichannel tools can create a more consistent relationship between stores and digital channels. Customers may browse online, collect an order at a nearby location, return an online purchase in store, or receive personalized offers based on previous activity. The software needs to represent these interactions accurately in customer and order records. Marketing functionality should support segmentation, promotional codes, gift cards, loyalty programs, abandoned-cart messages, product recommendations, and email integrations. Retailers should be able to measure which campaigns drive profitable sales instead of relying on traffic figures alone. Reporting, automation, and everyday usabilityUseful reporting turns operational data into decisions. A retailer should be able to monitor sales by channel, product, category, location, and time period. Margin analysis, stock aging, sell-through rates, return patterns, and fulfillment performance can reveal problems that basic revenue dashboards miss. Automation can reduce repetitive administrative work. Examples include low-stock alerts, scheduled catalog updates, automatic tax calculations, customer notifications, order routing, and marketing triggers. However, automation should include approval rules and visible logs so employees can review what happened and correct exceptions quickly. Usability affects adoption across the organization. Store associates, warehouse employees, customer service agents, and managers may all use the platform differently. A clean administration interface, clear permissions, responsive support, and practical training resources can determine whether the system delivers its promised benefits. Migration planning and partner supportMoving away from NCR Retail Online involves more than importing product names and prices. The project may include customer accounts, order history, categories, images, inventory quantities, discount rules, shipping settings, tax data, and integrations. Before choosing a platform, define which information must be preserved and which processes can be redesigned. A staged migration is usually safer than an abrupt switch. The implementation team should create a data map, clean duplicate records, test integrations, validate inventory totals, review redirects, and run sample orders through every fulfillment path. A temporary parallel environment can expose issues before the new storefront becomes public. An experienced NCR Counterpoint partner can provide valuable assistance with architecture, customization, data conversion, training, and post-launch support. Evaluate partners according to their retail experience, documentation, communication practices, and ability to support the selected platform over time. A practical selection checklistUse the following criteria when comparing replacement platforms and implementation partners:
Shortlist candidates by testing realistic business scenarios rather than relying on feature lists. Ask each vendor or partner to demonstrate a product update, an inventory adjustment, an online order, a return, and a cross-location fulfillment process. The results will reveal how well the platform fits daily operations. The right replacement for NCR Retail Online should create a dependable connection between ecommerce and physical retail. Begin with inventory accuracy and operational integration, then assess customer experience, security, reporting, scalability, and partner capability. A structured evaluation and carefully tested migration can help preserve business continuity while establishing a stronger foundation for future online growth. |
