We have been analyzing the NCR Retail Online (NRO) business and our NCR Industry Solutions Board, an internal team that helps set strategy, has decided to set the NRO product to End of Life on March 31, 2018 . The CPOnline Product was also recently announced with an end of life date of September 30th, 2017 . The End of Life terms indicate that all current customers will need to be transitioned off their respective product and the servers turned off by 9/30/17 (CPO) & 3/31/18 (NRO) . Your NCR Counterpoint business partner has been notified of this decision in advance and has started taking steps to help you transition your eCommerce solution.

Barcode Scanning for Accurate Inventory During Platform MigrationWhen an ecommerce platform changes, inventory accuracy can deteriorate quickly. Product records may be transferred with different stock fields, orders can arrive through multiple channels, and warehouse teams may continue using familiar processes while the new system handles quantities differently. A barcode scanning program provides a consistent way to connect physical products with digital records throughout the transition. NCR Retail Online was discontinued, requiring affected retailers to move to alternative ecommerce platforms such as Magento or WooCommerce through NCR Counterpoint partners. That switch is more than a storefront redesign. It also involves product catalog migration, order history, stock levels, fulfillment rules, and connections to retail management software. Using Barcode Scanning to Keep Inventory Accurate During the Switch means treating every scan as a controlled inventory event. With the right setup, a scan can verify the item, update available quantity, flag a mismatch, and create an audit trail that helps staff resolve problems before they affect customers. Why Inventory Accuracy Matters During MigrationA migration often creates temporary gaps between the old platform, the new online store, and the physical stockroom. A product may have one SKU in a legacy export, another identifier in a point-of-sale system, and a barcode printed on packaging that staff recognize immediately. If these identifiers are not reconciled, the store can display incorrect availability or ship an unintended item. Inventory errors also become more expensive when sales channels operate simultaneously. A customer may purchase an item online while a store associate sells the last unit at the register. Without timely synchronization, both transactions can appear valid even though only one can be fulfilled. A barcode should point to one sellable unit unless the business intentionally uses case packs or kits. If a carton and an individual item have different selling units, they should have clear identifiers and conversion rules. This prevents a receiving clerk from scanning a case while the system adds only one item, or from adding twelve units when the shipment contains a single package. Use established barcode formats where possible, but do not assume that every number is globally unique. Internal labels may be suitable for store operations, while manufacturer barcodes can help with purchasing and product recognition. Design Scanning Workflows For Every Stock MovementReceiving is the first opportunity to establish accurate quantities. Products that fail validation should move to an exception area instead of being added silently to available inventory. For fulfillment, scanning should verify both the order and the product. A worker can scan the order barcode, scan each picked item, and receive an alert if the SKU or quantity is wrong. A final packing scan can confirm that the contents match the shipment before the parcel is sealed. This two-stage process is especially valuable while order data and product mappings are still being tested. Returns require the same discipline. A returned item may be resalable, damaged, incomplete, or incorrectly associated with the original order. Scanning the return authorization and product barcode allows staff to assign the right disposition and prevents unusable merchandise from being added to sellable stock. Match Scanning Methods To Retail TasksDifferent environments need different scanning hardware and operating procedures. A small store may use a mobile phone for cycle counts, while a busy stockroom may need rugged handheld scanners with long battery life and wireless connectivity. The best choice depends on scan volume, label quality, network coverage, and how far employees move from workstations.
Barcode labels should remain readable under normal handling conditions. Test glossy packaging, curved surfaces, small labels, and low-contrast printing before selecting a standard. Keep a manual lookup process available, but require a reason code when staff bypass a scan so recurring label problems can be measured. Connect Barcode Events To The New PlatformA scanner is only useful when its result reaches the correct inventory system. Confirm how the replacement ecommerce platform exchanges data with the retail management system, warehouse application, point-of-sale software, and shipping tools. Determine whether scans update stock immediately, enter a queue, or require a later synchronization job. Data migration deserves the same attention as physical counting. Retailers moving from NCR systems can use migration plugins to reduce repetitive transfer work, but automation should not replace validation. Import a controlled sample first, scan those products in the new environment, and compare the result with the legacy record and the physical item. Orders require particular care because line-item identifiers may differ between systems. A barcode scan during picking cannot correct a flawed product map by itself. Before launch, verify that each order line connects to the intended SKU, variant, tax treatment, and fulfillment unit. Detailed order data mapping can help preserve those relationships when moving order information into WooCommerce. Create Controls For Counts And ExceptionsA reliable scanning program needs a repeatable review process. Set a baseline count before the migration, then perform targeted counts after imports, integrations, and major catalog changes. Prioritize fast-moving goods, high-value products, items with frequent returns, and products that have produced recent discrepancies. Use exception reports to find the cause rather than simply adjusting quantities. Common causes include duplicate barcodes, unit-of-measure errors, unreceived transfers, canceled orders that did not release stock, and staff members scanning the wrong variant. Each adjustment should include the date, user, item, quantity, reason, and approving employee. Train staff on a short set of rules and reinforce them at the point of work:
Measure Accuracy After The SwitchInventory accuracy should be measured by comparing system quantity with physical quantity across a representative sample. A simple accuracy percentage can be calculated by dividing the number of items that match by the number of items counted. Track this result by department, location, product category, and process so the business can see where errors originate. Additional metrics can reveal operational weaknesses. Monitor scan failure rates, manual lookup frequency, receiving discrepancies, picking corrections, stock adjustments, order cancellations caused by unavailable items, and the time required to resolve exceptions. A high scan failure rate may point to poor labels or hardware problems, while frequent manual adjustments may indicate incomplete product mapping. Review these measures daily during the first weeks after launch and then move to a regular weekly or monthly cadence. Keep the legacy data available in a read-only form for reference, but establish one authoritative source for current inventory. Clear ownership prevents employees from correcting quantities in several systems and creating new conflicts. A controlled barcode process gives the migration a dependable operational backbone. Audit the catalog, standardize identifiers, test scan workflows, connect events to the replacement platform, and review exceptions until the results are stable. Retailers transitioning from NCR Retail Online can begin with a limited product group, prove the workflow in one location, and expand only after physical counts and digital records agree.
