We have been analyzing the NCR Retail Online (NRO) business and our NCR Industry Solutions Board, an internal team that helps set strategy, has decided to set the NRO product to End of Life on March 31, 2018 . The CPOnline Product was also recently announced with an end of life date of September 30th, 2017 . The End of Life terms indicate that all current customers will need to be transitioned off their respective product and the servers turned off by 9/30/17 (CPO) & 3/31/18 (NRO) . Your NCR Counterpoint business partner has been notified of this decision in advance and has started taking steps to help you transition your eCommerce solution.

Product Variant Swatches in Magento After an NCR Migration

Retailers moving their storefronts from NCR Counterpoint to Magento often look forward to richer merchandising, yet the first thing many discover is that their once-simple size-and-colour picker has become a clunky drop-down that hides options behind extra clicks. Product variant swatches solve that problem by turning choices into visual tiles customers can scan in a glance. Getting them right after a data import, however, takes more than flipping a switch in the admin panel, especially when stock counts, labels and regional conventions all need a second pass.

Australian merchants juggling GST, Afterpay, Click & Collect and weekend courier cut-offs from Australia Post rely on swatch clarity to keep conversion steady through peak periods like EOFY and the Black Friday rush. The configuration work done in the days after the import shapes how confidently shoppers pick the right size, colour or capacity, and how cleanly the back office tracks inventory across warehouses in Brisbane, distribution hubs in Sydney and pop-up fulfilment in Perth.

Why swatches matter for Australian shoppers

Australian consumers expect product pages to behave like the ones they see on The Iconic, Adore Beauty and the big-box chains. A shopper looking for a navy 12 in a range of jumpers wants to see navy as a coloured square, not as a word buried in a menu. Visual swatches lift engagement because they mirror the in-store experience of touching fabric and comparing shades under bright shop lighting, which translates to a measurable lift in add-to-cart rates for fashion and homewares retailers across Melbourne and Adelaide.

There is also a local tax and logistics layer to consider. When a customer in Hobart selects a heavier item, the swatch grid should reflect whether that variant triggers a different freight band with Australia Post or StarTrack. When a bundle includes an age-restricted accessory, the chosen variant should prompt an age verification step at checkout. Treating swatches as pure cosmetic decoration misses half the job; they are also a routing layer that feeds GST calculations, shipping rules and Afterpay eligibility per option.

Preparing your catalog before the import

Jumping straight into Magento and expecting swatches to appear is the fastest route to a tangled product grid. Before any data is pushed across, retailers should pull a clean export from NCR Counterpoint and run an audit on every SKU that ships in more than one size, colour or finish. That audit reveals duplicate attribute codes, missing option labels and the inevitable legacy entries left behind from past range reviews.

A practical first step is deciding which attributes will become swatches and which will stay as text. Colour, size, capacity and material almost always deserve visual treatment, while voltage, plug type or warranty length usually work better as short text labels. Running the right inventory reports before finalizing migration confirms that every variant has real stock behind it, which prevents empty swatches from showing on the storefront after launch.

Building a solid backup plan for ecommerce data before you touch swatches

Swatch configuration touches almost every product in the catalogue, which means a misclick can ripple through thousands of SKUs in minutes. Taking a full snapshot of the Magento database, the media folder and the theme files before reconfiguring attributes is not paranoia, it is the standard operating procedure for any retailer serious about recovering quickly from a bad import.

The backup should be stored somewhere physically separate from the staging environment. Many Australian agencies keep a copy on a Sydney-based object store and another on a local drive inside the client's office, so a rollback can happen even if the staging server is unreachable. Keeping written notes on which attributes were flagged for swatch treatment, and why, makes the restore meaningful rather than just a safety net.

Configuring attributes the right way in Magento

Once the data lands, the real configuration begins. In the Magento admin, each variant-defining attribute needs its Visual Swatch or Text Swatch setting switched on, the catalog input type set to Swatch, and the store-owner scope chosen so that Australian pricing labels and English-AU terminology win over any inherited defaults. Default values should be cleared so the storefront does not silently preselect an out-of-stock option.

A common trap is leaving the Update Product Preview Image setting disabled. With it off, the main product photo never changes when a shopper clicks a different swatch, and that single omission costs more sales than almost any other setup error. Turning it on, then mapping every swatch option to its corresponding gallery image, gives customers the instant feedback they expect when browsing a new release on a phone during their commute on the Sydney Trains network.

Choosing swatch types for the local market

Magento supports visual, text and dropdown swatches, and the choice depends on what the customer actually needs to compare. Colour swatches work beautifully for fashion, cosmetics and homewares, while text swatches suit technical products such as appliances, where a buyer wants to read "220–240V" rather than guess from a coloured box. Dropdowns still have a place for long lists such as fragrance families or mattress sizes, but they should be reserved for options that genuinely need scrolling.

For retailers serving regional Australia, mixed swatch grids are often the smartest move. A camping store might use visual swatches for tent capacity and colour, but text swatches for fabric weight and season rating, because the latter carry technical meaning that colour cannot convey. The same logic helps Click & Collect fulfilment in suburban Brisbane stores, where staff picking orders benefit from clear text labels when an ambiguous colour name could delay a handover.

Mobile, Afterpay and the rest of the checkout journey

More than seventy percent of Australian retail traffic now arrives on a phone, and swatch grids that look tidy on a 27-inch monitor can become cramped on a six-inch screen. Magento's responsive swatch module handles most of this automatically, yet retailers should test every collection on a real device, with a real Australian SIM, to catch spacing issues that only show up on smaller viewports.

Swatch selection also feeds downstream checkout behaviour. Afterpay, which is deeply embedded in local buying habits, evaluates the cart total after variants are chosen, so a swatch that silently swaps a product for a higher-priced alternative can push a shopper above or below a payment threshold. Pairing swatch updates with clear price refreshes and a visible GST-inclusive label keeps Afterpay eligibility honest and avoids the abandoned-cart spike that follows confusing totals.

Going live and keeping the grid healthy

Launch day is not the end of the work; it is the start of a maintenance cycle. Once swatches are live, weekly checks should confirm that new variants added through the Magento backend inherit the swatch treatment, that out-of-stock options stay visible but disabled, and that gallery images stay in sync after supplier updates. A short monthly review of the swatch grid across the top fifty SKUs catches drift before it affects revenue.

Customer service teams in Melbourne and Sydney contact centres are the first to hear about a confusing colour name or a missing size tile, so their feedback should feed back into the catalogue team within the same week. Treating swatch maintenance as a shared responsibility, rather than a one-off project, keeps the storefront sharp and signals to repeat buyers that the brand pays attention to small details.

The single thing worth holding onto is this: swatches are not a cosmetic finish applied at the end of an NCR migration, they are a structural layer that ties product data, imagery, stock, shipping and pricing together. Treat the configuration as core merchandising work, back up everything before changing it, and review the grid on a phone as often as on a desktop. That approach turns a technical chore into a quiet conversion lift that Australian shoppers notice without ever having to think about.
