We have been analyzing the NCR Retail Online (NRO) business and our NCR Industry Solutions Board, an internal team that helps set strategy, has decided to set the NRO product to End of Life on March 31, 2018 . The CPOnline Product was also recently announced with an end of life date of September 30th, 2017 . The End of Life terms indicate that all current customers will need to be transitioned off their respective product and the servers turned off by 9/30/17 (CPO) & 3/31/18 (NRO) . Your NCR Counterpoint business partner has been notified of this decision in advance and has started taking steps to help you transition your eCommerce solution.

What Retailers Miss About NCR Retail Online and How to Rebuild ItWhen NCR Retail Online was active, retailers could connect ecommerce selling with the operational systems already running their stores. Product data, stock levels, customer orders, and fulfillment activity were brought into a more coordinated workflow instead of being managed as isolated online and offline processes. The platform has since been discontinued, leaving NCR Counterpoint users to evaluate alternatives such as Magento and WooCommerce through NCR Counterpoint partners. The hardest part of that transition is rarely choosing a new storefront. It is identifying the practical conveniences retailers depended on and recreating them without adding unnecessary manual work. A successful replacement should preserve the business logic behind the old system: accurate inventory, dependable order processing, automated replenishment, controlled user access, and a customer experience that reflects what is actually available in the store network. The Convenience Behind the PlatformRetailers often miss the unified operating model more than any individual interface feature. NCR Retail Online helped connect an ecommerce catalog to retail inventory and business management information, giving staff a shared view of products and orders. That reduced the need to update several systems after every sale, return, stock receipt, or price change. This kind of integration also supported consistent merchandising. Product descriptions, prices, images, variants, and availability could be managed with fewer duplicate edits. For a retailer with multiple locations, the benefit extended to store-level fulfillment, inventory visibility, and the ability to present a broader assortment online. The replacement goal should therefore be functional continuity rather than visual imitation. A new platform may look different while still delivering the same operational result if it connects the right systems and establishes clear ownership for product, inventory, customer, and order data. Inventory Accuracy Is the Core RequirementInventory synchronization is usually the feature retailers notice most when it stops working. If an ecommerce store displays quantities that do not reflect store sales, transfers, damages, or receiving activity, customers can purchase unavailable products. Staff then spend time apologizing, refunding, and correcting records. A replacement architecture needs a reliable inventory source and a defined synchronization schedule. Some retailers need near-real-time updates, while others can operate with scheduled imports every few minutes. The correct choice depends on sales volume, stock levels, store count, and how quickly a product can sell through multiple channels. Inventory logic should also account for reserved stock, safety buffers, backorders, and location-specific availability. A simple quantity feed may replicate basic visibility, but it will not reproduce the dependable experience retailers expect unless the rules around that quantity are documented and tested. Automation Replaces Repetitive Store WorkThe appeal of an integrated retail ecommerce platform is the reduction of routine administration. Order details can flow into fulfillment, shipment updates can return to the storefront, and customer notifications can be triggered without staff copying information between systems. Replenishment is another important area. WooCommerce, for example, can be extended with inventory and purchasing tools that monitor stock thresholds and initiate reorder workflows. Retailers moving from NCR can use this guide to automate WooCommerce reordering while defining approval rules that fit their purchasing process. Automation should remain visible and controllable. Staff need logs, exception alerts, and the ability to pause or amend a workflow when a supplier is late, a product is discontinued, or a sudden promotion changes demand. The strongest replacement is not the one with the most automation; it is the one that automates predictable tasks while making unusual cases easy to manage.
Selecting Magento, WooCommerce, or a Hybrid StackMagento is often suitable for retailers with complex catalogs, multiple websites, advanced pricing, and detailed customer or business-account requirements. Its flexibility can support sophisticated promotions, product relationships, and integration projects, though it generally requires more technical planning and ongoing maintenance. WooCommerce may be a better fit for smaller teams, retailers already using WordPress, or businesses that want a familiar content management environment. Its extension ecosystem can cover subscriptions, shipping, inventory, and customer engagement, but the quality of the final system depends heavily on extension compatibility and disciplined configuration. Neither platform automatically recreates a connected retail back office. The key decision is how each option will communicate with NCR Counterpoint or its successor systems. A partner should document data ownership, synchronization direction, error handling, and support responsibilities before development begins. Security Must Survive the MigrationA platform change can expose weaknesses that were previously hidden by established procedures. Payment credentials, customer records, employee accounts, order data, and integration keys all require careful handling during and after migration. Security should be treated as an operating requirement rather than a final launch checklist. Retailers should minimize payment-data exposure by using reputable hosted payment or tokenization services, enforcing strong administrator authentication, limiting permissions, and maintaining software updates. Logs should record important account, order, and configuration events without storing sensitive information unnecessarily. PCI obligations also need to be mapped to the new architecture. Retailers planning a move to Magento can review PCI compliance guidance alongside advice from their payment provider, hosting company, and qualified security professionals. The exact responsibilities depend on the checkout model, integrations, and business processes. A Practical Blueprint for Rebuilding the ExperienceThe most efficient projects begin with workflows rather than platform features. Document how a product is created, how stock enters the business, how an order is allocated, how a return is processed, and how a customer receives updates. This reveals the integrations and business rules that matter most. Retailers should also separate essential continuity from desirable enhancements. A reliable catalog, accurate stock, secure checkout, order synchronization, and fulfillment visibility may be more valuable at launch than advanced personalization or a large collection of promotional extensions. Useful priorities include:
A phased rollout can reduce risk. Start with a controlled product group or a limited store region, compare online quantities with physical counts, and monitor order processing under real conditions. After the basic workflow is stable, add advanced merchandising, loyalty, marketing automation, and reporting capabilities. The best successor to NCR Retail Online will feel familiar because it preserves the retailer’s operating rhythm, even if the technology underneath has changed. With careful integration, Magento or WooCommerce can support synchronized inventory, automated operations, ecommerce growth, and stronger security without forcing teams back into disconnected manual processes. Begin by auditing the workflows your stores rely on today, then work with an experienced NCR Counterpoint partner to design and test the replacement around those requirements. A focused migration can turn the loss of a discontinued platform into a more flexible, maintainable retail commerce system. |
