We have been analyzing the NCR Retail Online (NRO) business and our NCR Industry Solutions Board, an internal team that helps set strategy, has decided to set the NRO product to End of Life on March 31, 2018 . The CPOnline Product was also recently announced with an end of life date of September 30th, 2017 . The End of Life terms indicate that all current customers will need to be transitioned off their respective product and the servers turned off by 9/30/17 (CPO) & 3/31/18 (NRO) . Your NCR Counterpoint business partner has been notified of this decision in advance and has started taking steps to help you transition your eCommerce solution.

What to Do With Existing NCR Retail Online Subscriptions and Licenses

NCR Retail Online was built to connect ecommerce storefronts with NCR Counterpoint retail operations, helping businesses synchronize inventory, process online orders, and manage products across sales channels. Its automation and security features made it useful for retailers that wanted an online presence linked to established store systems.

That service has since been discontinued. Existing customers therefore need to treat their subscriptions, licenses, account access, and stored business data as part of a platform transition rather than an ongoing software renewal.

The right response is a controlled migration. Retailers should confirm their current service status, preserve essential information, review commercial obligations, and select a supported ecommerce platform through an appropriate NCR Counterpoint partner.

Confirm your current account status

Start by reviewing the latest communications from NCR, your Counterpoint reseller, or the partner that originally helped deploy NCR Retail Online. Identify the official discontinuation date, any remaining access window, billing end date, and instructions for exporting data. Save these notices with your licensing records.

A subscription and a software license may involve different terms. Your account could include hosting, ecommerce functionality, integrations, technical support, payment services, or third-party extensions. Make a list of every active component instead of assuming that cancelling one service automatically closes all related obligations.

Check recent invoices and payment statements for recurring charges. If automatic billing remains active after the service is no longer available, contact the responsible billing provider promptly and keep written records of cancellation requests, credits, and final invoices.

Protect access, records, and business data

Before changing platforms, identify the information your store needs to keep operating. Product catalogs, customer accounts, order history, tax settings, shipping rules, images, inventory records, discount codes, and content pages may all require separate export methods.

Administrator credentials and integration keys deserve special attention. Preserve access to your domain registrar, payment gateway, shipping accounts, email service, analytics tools, and Counterpoint environment. If a former employee or agency controls any of these accounts, update ownership and recovery details before migration work begins.

A structured export is safer than copying files randomly. Use consistent filenames, document export dates, and keep an untouched backup in a restricted location. The customer data checklist can help organize the records, validation steps, and decisions involved in moving information to a replacement store.

Evaluate replacement ecommerce platforms

NCR has directed customers toward alternatives such as Magento and WooCommerce through NCR Counterpoint partners. The best choice depends on catalog size, order volume, staff capabilities, required integrations, budget, and the level of technical maintenance your business can support.

Magento, now commonly associated with Adobe Commerce and Magento Open Source, can suit retailers with complex catalogs, multiple websites, advanced pricing, and extensive customization. It generally requires more development, hosting management, testing, and ongoing security administration.

WooCommerce may be practical for businesses that want a WordPress-based storefront with a broad extension ecosystem. It can offer flexibility at a lower initial cost, but the retailer remains responsible for plugin compatibility, updates, backups, performance, and security controls.

A Counterpoint partner can clarify how each platform will communicate with your point-of-sale and inventory system. Request a written description of synchronization frequency, inventory ownership, order flow, customer data handling, supported payment providers, and responsibility for troubleshooting.

Area to review Questions to ask before switching
Inventory Which system is the source of truth, and how quickly are stock changes synchronized?
Orders How are online orders sent to Counterpoint, and how are status updates returned?
Customers Can accounts, addresses, consent records, and order history be migrated accurately?
Payments Which gateway is supported, and will payment tokens need to be recreated?
Content Can product images, descriptions, categories, redirects, and SEO fields be imported?
Support Who handles platform, integration, hosting, and security issues after launch?
Costs What are the setup, licensing, hosting, extension, maintenance, and transaction fees?

Handle licenses and commercial commitments carefully

Do not assume that an unused NCR Retail Online license has resale value or can be transferred to another platform. Software licenses are governed by their agreements, and a discontinued product may have specific terms covering termination, refunds, data access, or support. Review the original contract and obtain written clarification from the relevant provider.

Separate software ownership from data ownership in your records. A retailer may own its product information, customer records, images, and order data while having no right to continue using discontinued application code or proprietary integrations. This distinction matters when retaining backups or asking a partner to assist with an export.

Also review connected services that may continue independently. Domain registration, SSL certificates, payment processing, email marketing, marketplace feeds, hosting, and shipping applications might have separate renewals. Cancel only what is no longer needed, and keep active services that must support the replacement website.

If a replacement platform requires new extensions or integration fees, ask for a complete cost estimate before approving the project. Include migration labor, data cleanup, testing, redirects, staff training, support, and recurring maintenance rather than focusing only on the headline subscription price.

Plan security and compliance during migration

A platform change creates opportunities to remove old accounts, rotate credentials, and reduce unnecessary access. Create named administrator accounts for current staff, enable multifactor authentication where available, and revoke credentials belonging to former employees, agencies, and obsolete integrations.

Customer information needs careful handling during export and import. Limit access to the people performing the migration, use secure transfer methods, and avoid sending unencrypted customer files through ordinary email. Establish retention rules for temporary exports and securely delete working copies when they are no longer required.

Review privacy notices, consent records, cookie settings, payment responsibilities, and regional requirements with qualified advisers where necessary. A new platform may change how analytics, marketing tools, checkout pages, and third-party services process personal information. The security switching guide provides useful areas to examine before and after the move.

Test the new environment with realistic but controlled data. Confirm that customer permissions, tax calculations, order totals, refunds, inventory adjustments, and staff roles behave as expected. Security testing should continue after launch, especially when new plugins, APIs, or custom code are introduced.

Use a controlled migration and launch process

A successful transition usually begins with an inventory audit. Remove discontinued products, merge duplicate customer records where appropriate, correct incomplete product attributes, and identify old URLs that need redirects. Cleaner source data reduces errors and makes the new store easier to maintain.

Build a staging website before changing the live storefront. Import a representative selection of products, customers, and orders, then test the full customer journey from browsing to fulfillment and refund. Include edge cases such as split shipments, out-of-stock items, discounts, tax exemptions, and cancelled orders.

Schedule the final migration during a lower-volume period. Freeze selected changes in the old system, perform a final export, reconcile stock levels, and complete a last backup. Keep the former environment available for reference if access remains authorized, but make the new platform the controlled source for transactions after launch.

A practical transition checklist

  • Confirm the discontinuation and final access dates in writing.
  • Inventory subscriptions, licenses, integrations, recurring charges, and data sources.
  • Export and securely back up products, customers, orders, images, settings, and reports.
  • Compare Magento, WooCommerce, and partner-supported alternatives against operational needs.
  • Test inventory synchronization, checkout, fulfillment, payments, redirects, and security before launch.

The purpose of this process is to preserve business continuity while giving the retailer a clearer, supportable ecommerce setup. Existing NCR Retail Online access should be treated as temporary, valuable for authorized data retrieval and reference, but unsuitable as the foundation for future online sales.

Begin by gathering your contracts, invoices, system credentials, data exports, and Counterpoint integration details. Then engage a qualified NCR Counterpoint partner to confirm the available migration path, document the scope, and move the store to a supported platform before access or operational dependencies become urgent.

After you have completed your move to a new eCommerce platform, don’t forget to submit the Store Closure Request form to close your NRO site and cancel your billing subscription.
