We have been analyzing the NCR Retail Online (NRO) business and our NCR Industry Solutions Board, an internal team that helps set strategy, has decided to set the NRO product to End of Life on March 31, 2018 . The CPOnline Product was also recently announced with an end of life date of September 30th, 2017 . The End of Life terms indicate that all current customers will need to be transitioned off their respective product and the servers turned off by 9/30/17 (CPO) & 3/31/18 (NRO) . Your NCR Counterpoint business partner has been notified of this decision in advance and has started taking steps to help you transition your eCommerce solution.

What to look for in an ecommerce agency for NCR migration supportThe discontinuation of NCR Retail Online has made platform planning a business priority for retailers that once relied on NCR for online selling, inventory synchronization, automated operations, and security controls. Moving to a new ecommerce system is more involved than copying product records into a different storefront. It affects order processing, customer accounts, payment workflows, fulfillment, reporting, and the connection between online and physical retail. Learn more about For The Home.html. A capable migration agency should understand the relationship between ecommerce software and NCR Counterpoint, especially when the replacement platform must continue supporting store-level inventory and business management. Magento and WooCommerce are common alternatives, but the right choice depends on catalog complexity, sales volume, staff capability, and the integrations required after launch. The strongest partner will combine technical migration expertise with practical retail knowledge. It should be able to document the existing environment, identify operational risks, create a controlled transition plan, and help your team run the new system confidently rather than leaving you with a newly installed but poorly configured website. Experience with NCR and retail system integrationsBegin by asking whether the agency has worked with NCR Retail Online, NCR Counterpoint, or comparable retail management systems. Familiarity with ecommerce alone is not enough. The agency should understand how product data, pricing, stock quantities, customer records, taxes, shipping rules, and order statuses move between an online store and a point-of-sale or back-office system. Ask for specific examples of previous NCR migration projects. A credible provider should explain what platform was selected, which data was transferred, how integrations were built, and what problems had to be solved. General statements about being a “full-service ecommerce agency” are less useful than evidence of experience with retail operations and legacy platform replacement. The agency should also know that different stores may use NCR Counterpoint in different ways. Some businesses need real-time inventory availability across locations, while others require scheduled synchronization, store pickup logic, customer-specific pricing, or centralized order fulfillment. A discovery process should identify these distinctions before anyone recommends a platform. A migration method that protects business dataData migration deserves its own project plan. Product names, descriptions, images, variants, barcodes, categories, pricing, inventory, customer accounts, order history, discount codes, and SEO metadata may all require different treatment. An agency should explain which records can be transferred directly, which need transformation, and which may need to be archived rather than imported. Look for a provider that performs a data audit before quoting a final project cost. It should identify duplicate SKUs, incomplete attributes, inconsistent category structures, outdated customer records, and conflicting inventory values. This audit creates a cleaner foundation for the new store and reduces the chance that old problems will be carried into Magento or WooCommerce. Testing should happen more than once. A responsible partner will perform a trial migration, validate record counts and relationships, and provide a staging environment where staff can review the results. The final launch should include a recent backup, a cutover checklist, and a rollback procedure in case a critical issue appears after the new store goes live. Platform judgment rather than one-size-fits-all sellingMagento can suit retailers with complex catalogs, multiple websites, advanced customer groups, extensive integrations, and significant internal or agency development resources. WooCommerce may be more practical for smaller teams seeking a flexible WordPress-based store with a broad selection of extensions and a simpler administrative experience. Neither platform is automatically the correct replacement for every NCR Retail Online customer. A good agency will make its recommendation based on requirements instead of steering every client toward the platform it happens to sell. It should compare hosting, licensing, development, maintenance, security, extension costs, performance, and future scalability. The proposal should also explain which functions will be handled by the ecommerce platform, which will remain in NCR Counterpoint, and which will require custom integration. For retailers comparing options, resources on replacement order tools can help frame discussions about automated order routing, status updates, and fulfillment workflows. The agency should then translate those general possibilities into a solution designed around your actual daily processes.
Integration, automation, and order continuityMigration support should cover the complete transaction lifecycle, not just the storefront. Customers expect accurate availability, reliable checkout, correct tax calculation, timely confirmation emails, and clear shipping updates. Retail staff need orders to reach the appropriate system without manual re-entry or ambiguous statuses. Ask the agency to map every integration and identify the system of record for each type of data. Inventory may originate in Counterpoint, while product content may be managed in the ecommerce platform. Payment authorization, refunds, shipment tracking, gift cards, loyalty data, and customer service notes may involve several external services. Without clear ownership rules, synchronization errors can produce overselling, duplicate orders, or inaccurate reports. The provider should also explain its approach to monitoring. Automated connections need logs, alerts, retry rules, and a process for resolving failed jobs. During the transition, the agency should test regular orders, split shipments, cancellations, returns, refunds, store pickup, discount combinations, and unusual inventory situations rather than limiting testing to a successful credit-card purchase. Security, performance, and long-term supportSecurity must be assessed before migration, during development, and after launch. The agency should discuss secure hosting, software updates, administrator permissions, payment compliance, backup retention, malware monitoring, and vulnerability response. It should never imply that installing a platform automatically solves security concerns. Performance matters because a slower storefront can reduce conversions and frustrate shoppers, particularly during holiday campaigns or promotional events. Ask how the agency will handle image optimization, caching, database efficiency, content delivery, search performance, and traffic spikes. A performance plan should include measurable targets and testing under realistic conditions. Support arrangements deserve the same scrutiny as technical architecture. Find out whether the agency provides emergency coverage, response-time commitments, ongoing maintenance, analytics reviews, and a named account or technical contact. A retailer should know what happens when an integration fails on a weekend, a payment provider changes its requirements, or a platform update affects checkout. Communication, training, and launch managementMigration projects involve merchandising, store operations, finance, customer service, marketing, and management. The agency should establish a communication rhythm with clear owners, decision deadlines, documentation, and progress reporting. A project manager who can explain technical issues in operational language will reduce delays and prevent misunderstandings. Training should be tailored to each role. Merchandisers may need help with product editing and promotions, while customer service staff require order lookup and refund procedures. Store teams may need guidance on inventory availability, pickup orders, or exceptions created by the new workflow. Recorded sessions and written procedures are valuable when staff turnover occurs. Useful signs of a disciplined partner include:
An agency should also help define launch-day responsibilities. Decide who freezes catalog changes, who approves the final data load, who monitors orders, and who communicates with customers if a temporary service interruption occurs. A controlled launch is easier when everyone knows the sequence before the switch is made. Commercial terms and measurable business valuePrice comparisons are meaningful only when proposals describe the same scope. Review discovery, design, development, data cleansing, integration work, hosting, testing, training, launch support, and ongoing maintenance separately. A low initial estimate may exclude essential work that appears later as change orders. Ask how success will be measured after migration. Relevant indicators might include inventory accuracy, order processing time, checkout conversion, page speed, support tickets, manual work avoided, and the percentage of orders transmitted successfully to the appropriate system. These measures connect the technical project to retail outcomes. The agency should be willing to discuss risks openly. It may identify limitations in legacy data, unsupported Counterpoint functions, third-party extension conflicts, or processes that should be redesigned rather than reproduced. Transparent advice is more valuable than a promise that every existing behavior can be copied without compromise. Before signing, confirm ownership of code, configuration, design files, data, credentials, and documentation. Establish how you can obtain exports if the relationship ends. A migration partner should help create independence and operational clarity, not make the business permanently dependent on undocumented custom work. Review potential agencies against the same criteria, request relevant case studies, and require a discovery-led proposal. The right partner will show how the new ecommerce platform can preserve essential retail workflows while creating room for better merchandising, stronger customer experiences, and more reliable automation. Start by documenting your NCR Retail Online setup, integrations, data sources, and operational pain points. Then invite qualified NCR Counterpoint partners and ecommerce specialists to assess the environment, compare Magento and WooCommerce where appropriate, and produce a migration roadmap with costs, milestones, testing requirements, and post-launch support. A carefully chosen agency can turn a discontinued platform into a controlled opportunity to modernize the entire online retail operation. |
