We have been analyzing the NCR Retail Online (NRO) business and our NCR Industry Solutions Board, an internal team that helps set strategy, has decided to set the NRO product to End of Life on March 31, 2018 . The CPOnline Product was also recently announced with an end of life date of September 30th, 2017 . The End of Life terms indicate that all current customers will need to be transitioned off their respective product and the servers turned off by 9/30/17 (CPO) & 3/31/18 (NRO) . Your NCR Counterpoint business partner has been notified of this decision in advance and has started taking steps to help you transition your eCommerce solution.

Why Automated Operations Still Matter After NCR Retail OnlineLeaving NCR Retail Online changes the technology behind an ecommerce operation, but it does not reduce the work required to run a dependable retail business. Orders still need to move quickly, stock counts must remain accurate, customer information requires protection, and store teams need clear visibility across every selling channel. NCR Retail Online was designed to connect online stores with retail inventory and business management systems. Since the product was discontinued, businesses have had to move to alternatives such as Magento or WooCommerce through NCR Counterpoint partners. That transition is a platform decision, but automation remains an operational necessity regardless of which replacement is selected. A new storefront can recreate the shopping experience, yet it cannot compensate for disconnected processes. Retailers that preserve automated data flows and routine controls are better positioned to protect margins, reduce staff workload, and deliver consistent service during and after migration. The platform change does not remove operational complexityRetail activity rarely happens in one place. A customer may browse online, purchase through an ecommerce store, return an item to a physical location, and contact support about a delivery. Each step creates information that must be recorded and shared with inventory, accounting, fulfillment, and customer service systems. When those updates depend on spreadsheets or manual re-entry, small delays become expensive errors. A sale may remain available online after the last unit was purchased in a store. A returned product may sit outside the sellable inventory count. An employee may use an outdated price or promotion because the latest information has not reached every channel. Automation creates repeatable connections between systems. It can transfer orders, adjust inventory, apply pricing rules, trigger fulfillment tasks, and update customer records without requiring an employee to copy the same information several times. The replacement platform may look different, but the need for these connections remains constant. Inventory accuracy is the foundation of customer trustInventory synchronization is one of the clearest reasons to maintain automated operations after a software transition. Customers expect an item shown as available to be genuinely available, especially when an order is placed for a gift, a seasonal product, or a time-sensitive purchase. Retailers can review gift merchandise as an example of the varied product groupings that may require thoughtful stock rules and merchandising data. A reliable system should reconcile quantities from stores, warehouses, ecommerce orders, returns, transfers, and adjustments. It should also account for safety stock, reserved units, damaged goods, and products awaiting inspection. These rules help prevent overselling while giving buyers more accurate delivery expectations. Product information needs the same discipline. Attributes, sizes, colors, images, descriptions, and categories should remain consistent across channels. Apparel illustrates the issue clearly: a shopper browsing men’s pants and jeans expects dependable size information, current availability, and correct product details. Automated catalog updates reduce the chance that one channel displays incomplete or outdated information. Connected selling needs a durable systemMoving away from NCR Retail Online can encourage retailers to focus on the visible storefront: design, navigation, checkout, and promotional features. Those elements matter, but the less visible operational layer often determines whether the store performs well over time. A modern site still depends on payment processing, tax calculation, shipping rules, order routing, inventory updates, and customer communications. Magento and WooCommerce can support different business models and levels of customization, particularly when implemented by experienced NCR Counterpoint partners. The right choice depends on catalog complexity, store integration, reporting requirements, budget, and internal expertise. Regardless of the platform, implementation should preserve the connections that keep online and physical retail aligned.
Automation also makes growth more manageable. Adding a sales channel or increasing order volume should not require a matching increase in repetitive administrative work. A connected architecture allows employees to concentrate on exceptions, customer relationships, merchandising decisions, and fulfillment issues that genuinely require judgment. Security and resilience belong in daily workflowsSecurity is sometimes treated as a feature that belongs to the checkout page, but effective protection extends throughout the retail operation. Customer accounts, payment information, employee access, order records, and inventory data all need appropriate controls. A discontinued platform can therefore be a prompt to review permissions, integrations, backup practices, and data retention. Automated safeguards can support this review. Role-based access can limit sensitive actions to authorized employees. Audit logs can show who changed a price, adjusted stock, or issued a refund. Scheduled backups and monitored integrations can make it easier to identify failures before they affect a large number of orders. Resilience also depends on alerts. A failed inventory connection, delayed payment response, or broken shipping integration should produce a visible warning rather than remain hidden until customers complain. Exception-based automation directs attention to unusual events while allowing routine transactions to proceed with minimal intervention. Better data supports better retail decisionsAutomation produces operational data that can be used for planning, provided the underlying records are consistent. Retailers can examine sell-through rates, stock aging, return patterns, promotion performance, and order fulfillment times. These measures help identify products that need replenishment, markdowns, improved descriptions, or different placement. Without reliable automation, reporting becomes a collection of partial snapshots. Ecommerce sales may be separated from store transactions, returns may be counted late, and inventory adjustments may lack a clear reason. Managers then spend time validating the numbers instead of acting on them. Consistent data also improves customer service. Support staff can see whether an order was accepted, packed, shipped, delivered, canceled, or returned. They can provide a clear answer without contacting several departments or asking a customer to repeat information. That speed can be especially valuable for multichannel retailers handling peak periods. A practical transition path for retailersA successful move away from NCR Retail Online should begin with process mapping rather than a design mockup. Retailers should document how products enter the catalog, where inventory is stored, how orders are routed, how returns are handled, and which systems manage customer and financial records. This reveals dependencies that may be easy to overlook during a platform migration. Data quality deserves attention before any transfer. Duplicate products, inconsistent SKUs, incomplete attributes, old customer accounts, and unclear inventory statuses can create problems in the replacement environment. Cleaning these records early makes testing more meaningful and reduces the risk of carrying legacy errors into a new system. The following priorities can help preserve operational continuity:
Migration should also include a controlled period of observation. Comparing the replacement system with established sales and inventory records can expose synchronization gaps before they become widespread. Staff training should focus on exception handling as well as routine tasks, since employees need to know what to do when an automated process stops or produces an unexpected result. Automation is therefore best viewed as an operating principle rather than a feature tied to one discontinued product. The platform may change, the integrations may be rebuilt, and the customer-facing design may be refreshed, but dependable retail still relies on timely data and repeatable workflows. Retailers preparing for the transition should audit their current processes, identify the automations that protect revenue and service quality, and work with an NCR Counterpoint partner to configure a suitable Magento, WooCommerce, or comparable environment. Preserving those operational connections will help the business move forward with greater accuracy, security, and control. |
