Setting up a Free Shipping Promo Code
Overview:
This article will show you how you can set up a free shipping promotion for UPS and FedEx shipping methods. This method of providing free shipping won't work for Matrix Rates, Table Rates, Flat Rates or USPS third party rates.
Please Be Advised
: Helping merchants construct their promotional codes is not the kind of support included with a merchant's monthly fees. However, in most cases we have proven helpful in helping you determine why your promo code isn't working. Therefore, feel free to contact us for assistance with troubleshooting your efforts to set up a promo code. Failure on our part to assist you with your promotional efforts does not warrant any kind of compensation for lost sales, nor is a promo code failing to work considered a "store down emergency." This kind of support will be provided by our technicians "at will" and will fall under the category of non-emergency support.
If we aren't able to assist, we do offer advanced configuration of promo codes training through the Professional Services team. This time is billable.
Step 1. Enable Free Shipping
Configuration to be used in conjunction with UPS:
-
Log into the NRO Admin Panel of your site.
-
Go to
Systems / Configuration
/ Sales Section /
Shipping Methods
and expand the UPS panel.
-
Set Free Method to the UPS option you want to use for the Free Shipping Promo. Enable Free Shipping with Minimum Order Amount. Indicate an extremely high order amount (99999.99)
Configuration to be used in conjunction with FedEx:
-
Go to
Systems / Configuration
/ Sales Section /
Shipping Methods
and expand the FedEx panel.
-
Set Free Method to the FedEx option you want to use for the Free Shipping Promo. Enable Free Shipping with Minimum Order Amount. Indicate an extremely high order amount (99999.99)
Save the changes by clicking the Save Config button in the upper right corner of the screen.
Step 2: Define the Promo Code
Under the Promotions menu, choose Shopping Cart Rules.
Click the Add New Rule button in the upper right portion of the screen.
Define the Rule Information:
-
Rule Name
: This is not visible to the customer. This will help you identify, at a glance, the purpose of the promo.
-
Description
: This is a good place to explain the purpose of the promo code, for internal use only.
-
Status
: Active means the code can be used. Inactive leaves the promo in place, but not usable in the storefront.
-
Customer Groups
: These are the customer categories who can use the promo code.
-
Coupon
: Specific Coupon requires that a Coupon Code is created. This code must be entered by the customer either in the cart or during checkout, in order to be applied to the order. No Coupon will apply the coupon to the order, without the customer needing to enter a code.
-
Use Auto Generation
: This is a nice feature, if you need to create many coupons for distribution to a list of customers. This will not allow you to configure who receives the codes. It only creates the codes that you will then provide to your customers.
-
Uses per Coupon
: This allows you to restrict how many times the coupon is used, by all of your customers. For example, $15 off order total for the first 100 customers of the day.
-
Uses per Customer
: This allows you to limit the number of times a single customer can use the promo code. This is controlled by their account information and it is tied to the email address on the account. If a customer opens multiple accounts, they will be able to use the coupon multiple times. NOTE: If you allow Guest Checkout in the store, you should NOT choose Not Logged In from the Customer Groups allowed to use the coupon. Doing so goes against the logic of the restricted code usage and will only allow one anonymous customer to use the code.
-
From Date
: Beginning date of the promotion.
-
To Date
: Ending date of the promotion. If the promotion is ongoing, leave blank.
-
Priority
: Multiple promo codes can be applied to an order. The priority determines where in what sequence this promo code should discount, if there are multiple enabled promo codes that automatically apply to the cart.
-
Public in RSS Feed
: If you want for these promo codes to appear in RSS feeds for people who are subscribed to your store's RSS feed, enable this option.
Below is an example of how the Rule Information tab could be configured. This example will illustrate how to set up free shipping on specific items. The Rule Information tab defines when the promo will begin and end, provides a place for internal information about the purpose of the promo code, can be configured to allow specific customer categories (published from Counterpoint or assigned to new NRO customers by default upon account creation) to receive the promotion, and can be prioritized against the other cart rules.
Define the Conditions tab
This is where things can get a little tricky. This is the "first checkpoint" to determine if someone's order qualifies for the promo code. The key here is to only use enough filtering to accomplish your end result. The more conditions you create, the more exclusions will occur. Using the provided cart and product options, configure the Conditions tab with the criteria necessary to qualify for the promotion.
Not all promo codes need filtering by means of the Conditions tab. The example this article demonstrates does not require additional filtering on the Conditions tab.
Define the Actions tab
-
Apply
: these options are not used in this example (free promotional shipping)
-
Discount Amount
: this setting is not used in this example
-
Maximum Qty Discount is Applied To
: this setting is not used in this example
-
Discount Qty Step (Buy X)
: this setting is not used in this example
-
Apply to Shipping Amount
: Set this to Yes
-
For matching items only will only apply free shipping to items indicated in the Rules defined at the bottom of the Actions tab. (most merchants choose this setting)
-
For Shipment with Matching Items will apply free shipping to the total order amount, if any item in the rules defined on the Actions tab is present.
-
Stop Further Rules Processing
: Magento affords the ability to apply multiple discounts to the cart, if a discount code is not required to be entered by the customer. This setting indicates whether you want for those additional cart rules to further discount any eligible items in the cart.
At the bottom of the Actions Panel, you will find another section similar to the Conditions tab that will let you further define what shopping carts are eligible for the promotion. Items can be filtered by individual SKUs or you can filter for a specific category of items.
Attributes that can be useful to use in Price Rules are:
Sku, Brand, and Category
.
Activating Attributes for Shopping Cart Price Rules
NRO / Catalog / Attributes / Manage Attributes
-
In your
NRO Admin Panel,
browse to
NRO / Catalog / Attributes / Manage Attributes
.
-
Search for the
attribute
you want use in your shopping cart price rules.
-
Click
on the
attribute
to open it's details.
-
Under the
Front end Properties
section, changer the
Use for Promo Rule Conditions
to
Yes
.
-
Save
your changes.
Your attribute will now be available to use for Shopping Cart and Catalog Price Rules.
TIP: If you have specific items for which shipping should be discounted, you could set up a category in Counterpoint called Free Shipping Items and assign your free shipping items to this category. After the category is published, it can be hidden from the storefront. To hide the category, in the NRO Admin panel, go to Catalog > Manage Categories. Find the Free Shipping Items category. On the bottom of the category's General Information tab is a setting labeled, "Include in Navigation Menu." Set that to No and save your changes.
Below is an example of how items in a specific category were excluded from shipping. If only items in that category are in the cart, the free shipping method defined by the steps in the first part of this article will display the Free Shipping method as 0.00. If there are other items in the cart, only those items will be used to calculate the shipping.
NOTE:
this is only possible, if the shipping methods used in the storefront are third party, such as UPS and FedEx. If Matrix, Flat Rate or Table Rate shipping methods are used, an extension is required to exclude product groups from the shipping calculations. Please review this article, for information about excluding specific items from shipping quotes, when these shipping methods are used:
http://help.ncrretailonline.com/article/how-do-i-exclude-certain-items-from-shipping-if-i-use-matrix-rates-or-table-rates-as-my-shipping-method.html
Note the setting for "Free Shipping." It has been set to "For matching items only."
This is how the shipping quote will appear, if items from either of the two categories filtered above exist in the cart:
