We have been analyzing the NCR Retail Online (NRO) business and our NCR Industry Solutions Board, an internal team that helps set strategy, has decided to set the NRO product to End of Life on March 31, 2018 . The CPOnline Product was also recently announced with an end of life date of September 30th, 2017 . The End of Life terms indicate that all current customers will need to be transitioned off their respective product and the servers turned off by 9/30/17 (CPO) & 3/31/18 (NRO) . Your NCR Counterpoint business partner has been notified of this decision in advance and has started taking steps to help you transition your eCommerce solution.

How to Replicate NCR’s Product Bundling Logic in WooCommerce

NCR Retail Online was designed to connect ecommerce selling with retail inventory, business management and automated operations. Its discontinuation means retailers moving to WooCommerce need to recreate the commercial logic behind product bundles rather than simply import product names and prices. The goal is a storefront where a customer can buy a coordinated set while the retailer still knows exactly which individual items must be picked, replenished and accounted for. For an Australian business, that transition involves more than choosing a WooCommerce extension. A bundle may need to respect GST-inclusive pricing, Australian Consumer Law, stock held across stores in Sydney or Brisbane, and delivery expectations for customers in Melbourne, Perth or regional areas. A carefully modelled catalogue can preserve the convenience of a legacy retail platform while giving the business greater control over promotions and fulfilment.

Translate Bundles Into Component Rules

Begin by documenting how each existing bundle behaves. A fixed bundle might contain one coffee machine, two mugs and a packet of beans, with every order consuming the same components. A configurable bundle may let shoppers select a colour, size or accessory. A frequently bought-together offer may display related products but leave customers free to purchase them separately. These are different structures and should not be forced into one WooCommerce product type.

For a fixed set, a product-bundling extension can connect a parent product to simple or variable child products. The parent controls the customer-facing name and description, while the components control inventory. For a configurable set, use rules that require a selection before checkout and pass the chosen variations into the order. This distinction is essential: selling a “breakfast collection” as one stock keeping unit can create inaccurate inventory if the warehouse actually stores each plate, cup and utensil separately.

Legacy catalogue content can provide useful reference material while the structure is rebuilt. For example, the old NCR Retail Online site illustrates the kind of category-based merchandising that retailers may want to preserve, including home and entertaining products. Treat those pages as a source for product relationships and customer language, not as a substitute for a new stock model.

Build The Product And Inventory Model

WooCommerce should receive a clear parent-and-component hierarchy. Give every sellable component its own SKU, tax status, weight, dimensions and stock quantity. Then define the bundle recipe: component SKU, required quantity, optional quantity, and any variation constraints. If a hamper contains three candles and one serving tray, the system should deduct three candle units and one tray when the bundle is purchased.

Inventory synchronisation becomes more reliable when the bundle does not maintain a separate fictional stock figure. Its available quantity should normally be calculated from the limiting component. If there are ten trays but only four candles, the bundle should show four available sets, unless the retailer has reserved stock or a back-order policy. This prevents online customers from buying a set that the shop cannot assemble.

Australian retailers often hold inventory in a storefront, warehouse and marketplace channel at the same time. A shop in Adelaide may have stock available for local pickup while the national warehouse supplies orders sent to Darwin. The inventory connector should therefore map locations and fulfilment rules rather than synchronise one total number blindly. Set a safety buffer where courier delays, damaged goods or in-store purchases make real-time figures less dependable.

Recreate Pricing, Options And Promotions

Decide whether a bundle price is fixed, calculated from components or discounted by a percentage. Fixed pricing is straightforward for a “complete desk set”, while calculated pricing works better when a customer can choose between several lamp styles or chair finishes. Record the original price and the bundle saving separately so the offer remains understandable at checkout and in advertising.

Optional components need explicit conditions. A customer might be required to choose one notebook, allowed to add up to two pens, or offered gift wrapping without affecting stock availability. Use clear labels and sensible defaults, then test every combination. A bundle that appears simple on a mobile screen can become confusing when it contains multiple variations, add-ons and quantity controls.

Promotions should be layered carefully. A storewide coupon, a bundle discount and a free-shipping threshold can interact in unexpected ways. WooCommerce rules should specify whether discounts apply to the parent bundle, each component, or the final cart line. The practical guidance in this discount and coupon systems resource is relevant when translating an older promotion structure into a new checkout.

For Australia, display prices in Australian dollars with GST treatment handled consistently. Most consumer-facing prices must show the total payable amount, and promotional claims should be accurate under Australian Consumer Law. If a bundle is marketed as a discount from the combined component price, retain evidence of the comparison price and the period during which it was genuinely offered.

Connect Bundles To Fulfilment And Customer Experience

A bundle should produce an order that warehouse staff can understand immediately. The packing view should show the parent product for customer recognition and the component list for picking. If the customer buys two identical gift sets, staff need to see the total component quantities without manually opening several product records. Add packing notes for substitutions, fragile items and split shipments where needed.

Shipping calculations also depend on the component model. A boxed dinnerware set has different dimensions from its individual pieces, and a bulky appliance accessory may change the courier service selected. Australian delivery zones can make this significant: a bundle that ships economically within Melbourne may require a different service to Western Australia or a remote Northern Territory address. Store package dimensions and weights at the bundle level, then test rates against the actual packed carton.

Some products require a reservation or allocation workflow rather than ordinary dispatch. Equipment hire, event packages and appointment-based offers may need calendar availability, deposits and return dates. A useful example of a different reservation context is this cloud studio booking, which highlights why availability logic should be separated from ordinary stock deduction. In WooCommerce, a bundle involving hireable items should connect to a booking system instead of pretending that every unit is permanently sold.

Customer communications should also name the components. Order emails, invoices and returns instructions should explain what is included, especially where an item has a different warranty or return condition. This supports Australian Consumer Law obligations and reduces support requests from shoppers who assume a pictured accessory is included when it is actually optional.

Test Migration And Measure Performance

Create a small test catalogue before migrating every product. Choose several representative cases: a fixed gift set, a bundle with variations, a component with limited stock, a promotion using a coupon, and an item fulfilled from more than one location. Place test orders as a guest, logged-in customer and store administrator. Check stock reduction, tax, shipping, refunds, order emails and accounting exports.

Run the tests on both desktop and mobile, since Australian shoppers frequently compare prices and complete purchases on phones. Confirm that bundle options remain usable on a narrow screen and that the saving is visible without forcing customers through several confusing steps. Accessibility also matters: labels, error messages and variation selectors should work with keyboard navigation and assistive technologies.

Use reporting to discover whether the new structure performs as intended. Track bundle conversion rate, average order value, component sell-through, abandoned carts and overselling incidents. A bundle that increases average order value but leaves one component sitting unsold may need a different recipe or a stronger merchandising position. Seasonal Australian buying patterns, such as Christmas gifting, summer entertaining and end-of-financial-year promotions, can justify temporary bundle rules rather than permanent catalogue changes.

For educational teams documenting the migration, a clean lecture notes workflow can help turn training material into searchable internal instructions. Keep the final operating guide focused on practical actions: how to edit a component, pause a bundle, handle a substitution and reconcile a stock discrepancy.

An older NCR-style bundle experience can be reproduced successfully when the business separates presentation, pricing, inventory and fulfilment logic. The WooCommerce store should make the offer attractive, while the underlying records remain precise enough for warehouse staff, accountants and customer service teams. Start by modelling one fixed bundle and one configurable bundle in a staging site, then place complete test orders before migrating the wider catalogue.

After you have completed your move to a new eCommerce platform, don’t forget to submit the Store Closure Request form to close your NRO site and cancel your billing subscription.
