We have been analyzing the NCR Retail Online (NRO) business and our NCR Industry Solutions Board, an internal team that helps set strategy, has decided to set the NRO product to End of Life on March 31, 2018 . The CPOnline Product was also recently announced with an end of life date of September 30th, 2017 . The End of Life terms indicate that all current customers will need to be transitioned off their respective product and the servers turned off by 9/30/17 (CPO) & 3/31/18 (NRO) . Your NCR Counterpoint business partner has been notified of this decision in advance and has started taking steps to help you transition your eCommerce solution.

Moving NCR Retail Discounts Without Losing Their Rules

When an NCR Retail Online store moves to Magento or WooCommerce, discount codes can be harder to transfer than product names and prices. A simple percentage reduction may migrate cleanly, while exclusions, customer restrictions, minimum spends, date windows and usage limits often need to be rebuilt manually. This matters for Australian retailers managing different fulfilment zones, GST-inclusive prices and seasonal campaigns around Boxing Day, EOFY and Click Frenzy. The safest approach is to treat every promotion as a set of business rules, then map those rules to the capabilities of the new platform and its NCR Counterpoint partner.

Audit Existing Promotion Rules

Begin by exporting every active, scheduled and historical code from NCR Retail Online. Capture the code itself, discount type, amount, start and end dates, minimum order value, customer eligibility, product restrictions, usage limits and whether the offer can be combined with another promotion.

Do not rely on a code list alone. A code such as WELCOME10 may exclude clearance stock, gift cards, sale products or a particular brand. Record whether the restriction applies to the whole cart, selected lines or the final order total. This distinction affects how Magento cart price rules and WooCommerce coupons calculate the result.

Product data should be reviewed at the same time because exclusions commonly depend on category, SKU, brand or stock status. The guidance on product data SEO is useful here: consistent titles, attributes and category assignments make it easier to identify the products that a promotion should include or leave out.

Translate Exclusions Into Clear Conditions

NCR rules may express an exclusion in a way that does not have a direct equivalent in the destination platform. “All full-price footwear except clearance items” might need a product attribute, a sale-status condition, a category tree or a carefully maintained SKU list.

Create a plain-English version of each rule before configuring it. For example: “Apply 15% to full-price shoes over $120, excluding gift cards, outlet lines and orders containing a previously discounted item.” This description becomes a reference for developers, merchandisers and customer support staff when the original NCR configuration is no longer available.

Be careful with combinations. A discount may be limited to one use per customer, one use per order or one use per code. These are different controls. A customer-level limit usually needs an account identifier or email address, while a per-order limit can often be enforced by the coupon engine itself. Guest checkout creates an additional risk because shoppers may bypass customer-based limits with multiple email addresses.

Rebuild Codes in Magento or WooCommerce

Magento offers detailed cart price rules, catalog price rules, customer groups, product attributes and conditions. This makes it suitable for complex exclusions, though the configuration can become difficult to maintain if every campaign uses a long list of individual SKUs. Where possible, use stable attributes such as “Promotion Eligible: No” or “Clearance: Yes”.

WooCommerce provides native coupon restrictions for products, categories, minimum spend, individual use and excluded sale items. More advanced requirements may need an extension or custom code. Check whether an extension evaluates the cart before or after shipping, tax and other discounts, since that timing can change the final amount.

Migration teams should avoid copying old codes without checking their commercial purpose. Some NCR coupons may have been created for a one-off local campaign in Melbourne, a staff benefit in Brisbane or a wholesale customer group in Perth. Archive expired codes, rename unclear rules and keep only the offers that have an active business reason.

A category mapping process can reduce errors when exclusions depend on taxonomy. The workflow described in automated category mapping can help match NCR categories with the new Magento or WooCommerce structure before discount conditions are rebuilt.

Account For Australian Pricing And Fulfilment

Australian shoppers generally see GST-inclusive prices, so confirm whether the migrated discount reduces the displayed tax-inclusive amount or is calculated against a tax-exclusive base. The checkout, order confirmation, invoice and accounting integration should all show the same treatment. A small rounding difference can create support issues when a code is used across several products.

Shipping conditions need separate testing. A promotion may exclude bulky goods, hazardous products or remote-area delivery, while another may provide free shipping only within metropolitan Sydney, Melbourne or Adelaide. If shipping zones are configured independently from the coupon engine, the discount may appear valid while the freight charge remains unchanged.

Local trading patterns also affect date rules. EOFY campaigns often run through 30 June, while Boxing Day offers begin immediately after Christmas and may span different time zones for customers in Perth, Darwin and the eastern states. Set the store timezone deliberately and test the exact opening and closing minute rather than assuming the server uses Australian Eastern time.

Payment methods can add another limitation. Some retailers exclude discounts from gift cards, Afterpay purchases or click-and-collect orders. Others permit a code for online orders but not purchases collected from a physical shop. These requirements should be written into the promotion specification instead of being left to checkout staff to interpret.

Test Discount Behaviour Before Launch

Build a test matrix using realistic baskets rather than testing only one qualifying product. Include a full-price item, a sale item, an excluded SKU, a gift card, a mixed cart, a minimum-spend basket and an order containing two eligible products. Run each scenario with and without a shipping charge.

Test the customer restrictions with a registered account, a guest account, a returning customer and an address that has already used the code. Verify the response when a shopper enters an invalid, expired or already-used coupon. Error messages should explain the issue without revealing internal rule names or exposing a valid code.

Promotion logic benefits from the same controlled mindset used in other rule-driven digital experiences. A casino promotion analysis can illustrate why eligibility wording, wagering-style conditions and visible restrictions must be tested as a complete customer journey, even though retail discount rules have different commercial and legal requirements.

Test the back office as well as the storefront. Confirm that the order export, inventory adjustment, refund calculation, tax record and accounting feed retain the discount amount. A code that works visually but produces an incorrect refund or report is not ready for production.

Run A Controlled Cutover

Use a small set of representative codes for a pilot migration before transferring the full promotion catalogue. Keep NCR available in read-only form if possible, and preserve an export containing the original settings, campaign notes and approval history.

Checks Before The Switch

  • Match every migrated code to an approved business rule
  • Test included products, excluded products and mixed carts
  • Confirm GST, rounding, shipping and refund calculations
  • Verify expiry times across Australian states and territories

Checks After The Switch

  • Monitor coupon rejection and redemption rates
  • Review orders containing exclusions or stacked discounts
  • Check customer service cases for unclear error messages
  • Disable duplicate or obsolete codes after the agreed overlap period
Requirement Magento approach WooCommerce approach Migration note
Product exclusions Cart rules using attributes, categories or SKUs Coupon product and category restrictions Prefer durable attributes over large SKU lists
Minimum spend Cart price rule condition Coupon minimum spend field Test GST-inclusive calculation
Customer eligibility Customer groups, segments or conditions Allowed emails, roles or extensions Guest checkout may weaken limits
Usage limits Per coupon, customer or cart controls Usage limit and user limit fields Test repeated use with the same email
Excluding sale items Conditions based on price or sale status Native sale-item restriction Confirm behaviour with manual markdowns
Date restrictions Rule activation and expiry settings Coupon start and expiry settings Check store timezone and daylight saving
Discount stacking Rule priority and stop-processing settings Individual-use and custom extension logic Test competing campaigns together

A staged launch is safer than switching every promotion at once. Start with a few high-volume codes, compare redemption and revenue figures with the old system, then migrate less-used offers. Keep customer-facing wording consistent across email, Google Shopping feeds, store signage and checkout messages so a shopper in Newcastle receives the same terms as one in Hobart.

The practical takeaway is to migrate discount codes as documented eligibility rules, not as isolated strings. Export the old conditions, rebuild them with stable product attributes, test Australian tax and fulfilment cases, and only retire the NCR setup after the new platform produces the expected cart, order and refund results.
