We have been analyzing the NCR Retail Online (NRO) business and our NCR Industry Solutions Board, an internal team that helps set strategy, has decided to set the NRO product to End of Life on March 31, 2018 . The CPOnline Product was also recently announced with an end of life date of September 30th, 2017 . The End of Life terms indicate that all current customers will need to be transitioned off their respective product and the servers turned off by 9/30/17 (CPO) & 3/31/18 (NRO) . Your NCR Counterpoint business partner has been notified of this decision in advance and has started taking steps to help you transition your eCommerce solution.

NCR minimum advertised price enforcement in Magento

For an NCR retailer, minimum advertised price (MAP) enforcement is primarily a catalogue-governance task, not a single setting. The price a shopper sees, the promotional price in the cart and the approved selling price in NCR Counterpoint must follow one documented rule. Inventory, customer groups and promotion dates need to be considered alongside that rule.

Many Australian merchants now operate a physical counter, a warehouse and an online store at once, especially around Sydney and Melbourne. NCR Retail Online connected ecommerce with retail inventory and business systems, but the product has been discontinued. Migrating through an NCR Counterpoint partner to Magento or WooCommerce therefore creates an opportunity to rebuild pricing controls without carrying forward ambiguous spreadsheet overrides.

Define the pricing contract

Start by defining what MAP means for the business. It may apply to selected brands or SKUs, a recommended online price, a particular channel, or a minimum price visible to customers. Specify the reference currency, tax treatment, effective dates and permitted exceptions. Treat clearance, member pricing and bundles as separate cases, and distinguish an advertised-price policy from a hard sales floor.

Australian pricing claims also require care. Australian competition law generally does not prohibit resale price maintenance, but the Australian Consumer Law (ACL), administered by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), still prohibits misleading or deceptive conduct. A “was $99, now $79” price must have a genuine reference basis, and manufacturer policies do not automatically settle consumer-law questions. Obtain legal advice on specific supplier contracts.

The policy should identify who can approve a breach, who can publish it and who receives an exception report. Record whether the manufacturer requires written consent or merely asks for compliance. That distinction prevents an internal promotion target from being mistaken for a legal obligation.

Map NCR data to Magento

Map the actual NCR Counterpoint price data before configuring Magento. Determine which records hold standard selling prices, customer-group prices, quantity breaks, markdown authority and promotion dates; field names and update methods vary by Counterpoint configuration. Do not assume that the Magento product identifier alone carries enough information. Include store, region, currency and tax attributes where the same SKU can have different commercial rules.

Choose a deliberate synchronization pattern. A scheduled import can be easier to audit than continuous updates, while event-driven changes can reduce the window in which a wrong price is visible. Whichever approach fits, use a staging area, validate the incoming value and publish it only after approval. Schedule Magento indexing after the price records are final, then confirm that search, catalogue and checkout resolve the same value.

Complex products expose assumptions quickly. NCR’s gift basket catalogue illustrates an assortment built from multiple items, so decide whether the advertised reference applies to the whole hamper, its components or a temporary promotion. A bundle displayed beside its individual items must not create a misleading comparison.

Configure precedence, permissions and access

Define price precedence explicitly. Decide what happens when a catalogue rule, cart price rule, special price and coupon overlap, and which combination may appear in an advertisement. A policy may constrain the visible advertised price without governing every cart-level discount, so state that scope clearly. Magento can calculate a final cart price, but that does not guarantee the advertised price respects the policy. Block an out-of-policy value before it reaches a listing feed or checkout rather than relying on order totals alone.

These controls may require catalogue attributes, pricing rules or a synchronization service rather than a single extension. A concise enforcement matrix sets out the intended treatment:

Pricing case NCR-side decision Magento control
Standard shelf price Approved selling price by store and tax context Published price and approved reference
Customer pricing Counterpoint customer pricing rule Eligibility and customer-group rule
Time-limited promotion Approved amount and effective dates Scheduled price with automatic expiry
Bundle or hamper Bundle and component records Explicit bundle-level comparison
Markdown or clearance Authorised override with an owner Visible exception with expiry and audit trail

Give price and promotion permissions separate from general catalogue administration. A merchandiser may prepare a promotion, while a manager approves its dates and advertised amount. Record each approval, retain the previous value and make emergency overrides expire. Audit any price-rule extension for compatibility with supported Magento versions, least privilege and clear maintenance ownership.

Keep a short runbook with integration endpoints, scheduled-job owners, credential locations and escalation contacts. When adding support references to that runbook, verify their owner and purpose, and keep API keys and database passwords in a managed secret store rather than the document. Test service accounts before launch; shared administrator logins remove useful evidence when a price needs to be traced.

Build clear customer-facing controls

Display prices in Australian dollars with GST included, and label delivery charges separately. Australian shoppers often compare product prices across Google Shopping, Catch and marketplace listings, so an unexplained difference can attract attention even when the underlying promotion is valid. Keep the item price, reference price and total payable amount visually distinct rather than compressing them into one ambiguous figure.

Clear hierarchy matters at the point of decision. The donation page design illustrates how a financial amount and its supporting message can be presented without clutter; the same principle applies to a struck-through price and its explanation. Show a genuine saving, its conditions and its end date in text that remains understandable on a phone.

Preserve the local delivery and payment experience while enforcing pricing. Australia Post estimates belong with the delivery method, and many shoppers expect buy-now-pay-later options such as Afterpay, Zip or Humm. Instalment messaging must not obscure the actual product price or imply that the advertised reduction lasts when it does not.

Test the rules before launch

Run a controlled pre-launch rehearsal with real product combinations, not only sample products. Include standard, member, promotional, bundle and clearance prices, plus the boundary moments when a promotion starts or expires. Test the final A$ amount, tax, delivery and payment handoff on mobile and desktop, then compare the checkout result with the approved NCR record.

Use the migration user acceptance testing guidance to assign named testers and business sign-off to each scenario. Keep failed cases in a defect log with the product, expected price, actual price, catalogue state and timestamp. A screenshot alone is weak evidence when scheduled imports and cached indexes are involved.

Also rehearse failures. Stop the import, reject malformed prices, delay a promotion and restore an earlier approved value. Define whether the system should reject publication, retain the last valid price or require an administrator override. Review catalogue search, product pages, cart rules, promotional feeds and tax-inclusive display after every test import.

Operate and audit the pricing cycle

Make the checks routine after launch. Schedule a recurring comparison of Magento prices with approved NCR records, review exceptions and retain price snapshots for audit and dispute handling. Assign a catalogue owner, a finance approver and a technical owner, with a shared escalation path for discrepancies. Review promotions across Google Shopping and marketplace channels, where stale advertised prices are particularly visible.

Price changes can coincide with payment migration, so verify that the new checkout still captures the correct tax, delivery and receipt data. NCR’s guidance on payment gateway configuration offers a reference for checking the transition rather than assuming gateway settings survive a platform change unchanged.

The practical takeaway is to make every advertised price traceable from approval in NCR Counterpoint to publication in Magento, with a named owner, an effective date and a recorded check at each release.
