We have been analyzing the NCR Retail Online (NRO) business and our NCR Industry Solutions Board, an internal team that helps set strategy, has decided to set the NRO product to End of Life on March 31, 2018 . The CPOnline Product was also recently announced with an end of life date of September 30th, 2017 . The End of Life terms indicate that all current customers will need to be transitioned off their respective product and the servers turned off by 9/30/17 (CPO) & 3/31/18 (NRO) . Your NCR Counterpoint business partner has been notified of this decision in advance and has started taking steps to help you transition your eCommerce solution.

What to Do with Legacy NCR Retail Online Templates and Customizations

NCR Retail Online connected ecommerce storefronts with NCR Counterpoint, retail inventory, and business-management tools, but the product has now been discontinued. For Australian retailers, that means old templates, checkout changes, product rules, and integrations need a deliberate transition rather than a simple visual copy into Magento, WooCommerce, or another platform.

A legacy storefront may still contain valuable merchandising logic and customer experience decisions. It may also contain obsolete code, hard-coded GST assumptions, unsupported payment scripts, or customisations that quietly depended on NCR services. Treat the old site as a source of evidence, not as a package to be moved wholesale.

Audit what remains before migration

Start by creating an inventory of every custom asset. Include page templates, theme files, CSS, JavaScript, product filters, checkout modifications, email layouts, coupon rules, shipping calculations, account pages, search settings, and connections to POS or stock systems. Capture screenshots of important pages and export configuration details where the platform permits it.

Separate assets into three groups: essential business logic, useful design elements, and abandoned experiments. A custom “low stock” label may support real sales decisions, while an old homepage banner may have been irrelevant for years. Review seasonal promotions, clearance categories, trade pricing, gift cards, and click-and-collect rules rather than assuming every setting is still active.

Australian conditions should be recorded during this audit. Check whether prices are displayed in Australian dollars, whether GST is included consistently, and whether delivery rules distinguish metro Sydney or Melbourne from regional Queensland, Western Australia, or Tasmania. Also document whether customers collect from a shop, use Australia Post, or rely on a courier integration.

Decide which code deserves a second life

Templates are usually easier to reuse than custom functionality. Brand colours, typography, navigation labels, product photography standards, promotional tiles, and content structure can be adapted to a modern theme. The underlying HTML and platform-specific template tags should generally be rebuilt, because copying old markup can bring security, accessibility, and performance problems into the new store.

Customisations need a stronger test. Ask what business problem each one solved, who owns the process now, and whether the new platform offers a supported setting or extension. For example, a manually coded stock rule might be replaced by native inventory reservations, while a bespoke product bundle may need a Magento module or a WooCommerce extension.

Do not copy credentials, API keys, payment tokens, or customer data into development files. Remove secrets from archived code and store any required credentials in a controlled password manager. If an old integration sends orders to a POS, accounting package, warehouse, or email service, confirm whether it is still authorised and compatible before recreating it.

Translate legacy behaviour into requirements

A migration is safer when functionality is described in plain business terms. Instead of saying “copy the old checkout script”, write “show GST-inclusive pricing, calculate delivery by postcode, allow pickup from selected stores, and prevent sale of unavailable stock”. This gives the implementation team a testable requirement and avoids locking the business to NCR-specific code.

The same approach applies to promotions. Record eligibility, expiry, stacking, minimum order values, customer groups, and exclusions for sale items or particular brands. If discounts were maintained in NCR Retail Online, use discount and coupon setup as a reference while deciding whether the replacement rules belong in Magento, WooCommerce, or a connected promotion service.

Pay attention to the less visible customer journeys. Test password resets, abandoned carts, order emails, refunds, returns, gift cards, stock alerts, and account history. An Australian customer who orders late on a Friday may expect a delivery estimate that accounts for weekends, public holidays, and the retailer’s dispatch location, not a generic overseas shipping promise.

Compare practical paths for old customisations

There are three common approaches: rebuild the required behaviour natively, replace it with a supported extension, or retire it. Rebuilding gives the cleanest long-term result but can require development time. An extension may be faster, although licensing, vendor support, data privacy, and update compatibility need review.

Retirement is often the best choice for features that created maintenance work without improving sales or operations. Keep an archived copy for reference, record why it was removed, and make sure staff understand the new process. The comparison below can help prioritise each legacy item.

Legacy asset or feature Recommended treatment Main risk Validation needed
Brand theme and page layout Rebuild in the new theme Broken responsive behaviour Mobile, tablet, and desktop review
Product filters and categories Map to native attributes and taxonomy Lost search visibility Search, filters, and SEO checks
Coupon scripts Recreate with platform rules or an extension Incorrect discounts or stacking Scenario-based promotion tests
POS and inventory connection Replace with supported integration Overselling or stale stock Stock and order reconciliation
Checkout custom code Rebuild only necessary functions Payment or security failures Test payments, refunds, and edge cases
Old banners and campaign pages Archive or selectively recreate Thin or outdated content Analytics and merchandising review
Customer email templates Rewrite using current variables Missing order details Test every transactional message

When comparing Magento and WooCommerce, consider operational capacity as well as feature lists. Magento can suit a larger catalogue, multiple stores, complex customer groups, and sophisticated pricing, but it usually demands stronger technical administration. WooCommerce can be practical for a smaller Australian retailer already comfortable with WordPress, although plugin quality and update discipline become critical.

Rebuild the customer experience carefully

A fresh theme should preserve recognisable elements without preserving every old limitation. Keep the retailer’s visual identity, familiar category names, useful content, and high-performing landing pages. Improve mobile navigation, keyboard access, image performance, and checkout clarity at the same time.

Use analytics and search data to decide what deserves priority. Review the most visited NCR pages, internal search terms, conversion paths, and pages generating support calls. Redirect valuable old URLs to relevant replacements, not simply to the homepage. Preserve product and category meaning where possible, while removing pages that are duplicated, empty, or no longer commercially accurate.

A practical rebuild checklist includes:

  • Recreate the header, footer, navigation, and key brand styles in supported theme files.
  • Map old product categories to a clear, searchable catalogue structure.
  • Confirm Australian GST display, AUD currency, and tax invoice requirements.
  • Rebuild delivery, pickup, returns, and warranty information for local customers.
  • Test Australia Post, courier, and store-collection rules by representative postcode.
  • Reproduce only promotions and customer rules that have a current business owner.
  • Check accessibility, page speed, structured data, and mobile checkout behaviour.

For shops serving communities in Brisbane, Geelong, Perth, or regional New South Wales, delivery wording should reflect actual service zones and cut-off times. Casual language such as “order this arvo” may suit a campaign, but legal, shipping, and returns information should remain precise and unambiguous.

Control data, orders, and the final cutover

Templates are only one part of the transition. Export product records, customer accounts, order history, redirects, images, tax settings, and promotion data according to the destination platform’s requirements. Clean duplicate SKUs, incomplete addresses, retired products, and inconsistent brand names before import. Keep an immutable backup of the original exports and a separate working copy for transformations.

Open orders need their own migration procedure. Confirm which orders remain unpaid, partially fulfilled, awaiting pickup, or subject to a return. The pending order guidance can help structure decisions about status mapping, fulfilment ownership, and customer communication during an NCR-to-Magento transition.

Run a rehearsal before the public launch. Place test orders with different delivery postcodes, apply promotions, process a refund, update inventory, send transactional emails, and verify that orders reach the relevant POS or fulfilment system. Check GST calculations on products, shipping, discounts, and refunds, including rounding behaviour.

After launch, keep the NCR environment available in a restricted, read-only form for the agreed retention period. Monitor failed payments, stock discrepancies, 404 errors, abandoned checkouts, and customer-service contacts. Arrange a controlled shutdown only after outstanding orders, financial records, backups, exports, and required compliance records have been checked.

Begin by making a spreadsheet of every NCR template, custom rule, integration, and active customer journey, then mark each item as rebuild, replace, archive, or retire before any production migration work starts.

After you have completed your move to a new eCommerce platform, don’t forget to submit the Store Closure Request form to close your NRO site and cancel your billing subscription.
