Customizing the Item URL

Purpose:

This article will explain how to create custom URLs, through the NRO Admin Panel.

Solution:

Select Catalog (horizontal top menu) / Manage Products.
Find the item you are for which you are wanting to edit the URL.
Under Product Information (left side panel), click on the General tab.
Edit the URL Key. *Note: spaces will be replaced with dashes
Save your changes.

WARNING : Magento expects the URL Key value for every item to be unique--- even though it allows them not to be unique. If you have parent items that have the same name and therefore the same url key, a number will be appended the end of the target path when setting up URL rewrites. The starting number will be the internal Magento Product ID of the item- but subsequent runs of the reindex will add on to this number. Until this is cleaned up, and each product has a unique URL Key, URL rewrites will not function properly and have issues redirecting.

For example, if the product ID ends in 191021—then 191021 is appended on to the end of the requested path, but next time it will be 191022, then 191023 etc.
