Create a text file in any word processor with each item number and its long description. You will save the file in .txt or .csv format.
Turn off Smart quotes
If you use Microsoft Word to prepare your long descriptions, you probably have "smart quotes" turned on (the curly, typographer's quotes that "curl in" towards the quoted words). Smart quotes imported into long descriptions will cause strange characters, so they should be turned off while creating long descriptions. To turn off smart quotes in MS Word:
Go to the
Tools
menu and select
AutoCorrect Options
...
Click the
AutoFormat
tab.
Deselect the checkbox next to Replace "Straight quotes" with "smart quotes."
Format of import data
The format should be as follows:
"Item number","Item long description"
(with double-quotes)
Example:
"123ABC","Here is my long description for item #123ABC."
"234BCD","Here is another long description, with <B>HTML</B> included."
"345CDE","Look, another long description! No new paragraph until the next item. Counterpoint expects that the line right after you press ENTER to be the next item.
"456DEF","This is my last long description. You can include commas in the description."
As you can see, the long description must be entered on one line and cannot contain any line breaks. It can wrap to the next line in your word processor, but just don't press ENTER in the middle of a long description! If you want a line break to appear in your long description, youm ust insert appropriate HTML code, such as a BR tag.
Note:
Do not insert double-quotes in your HTML. These will produce undesirable results in NCR Retail Online (NRO). Instead, use only single-quotes, or no quotes.
