What is an SSL certificate?

An SSL certificate is an electronic key that encrypts transmissions between two computers on a public network, providing privacy and security while an ecommerce customer shops in your store.

Think of an SSL certificate as an electronic ID card. From the customer's perspective, an SSL certificate assures a customer that they are dealing with a legitimate business. From a technical perspective, SSL certificates are used for secure e-commerce communications, protecting information such as credit card numbers and personal data.
