Meta Tags and How to Add Them

Summary:

To help describe Meta data, how it is used, where it used, and why you should use it.

Solution:

What is a Meta tag?

A Meta tag is a container to store descriptions about what a web page contains. From a search engine optimization perspective, it's important that the Meta Title, Meta Keywords and Meta Description are complete as they describe the page's content to the search engine. While the search engines don't rely exclusively on Meta tags, they can be helpful to your rankings if they complement the visible content found within your web pages.

What is a Meta title?

The Meta Title tag affects what is displayed in the title bar at the top of the browser. The title should never be anything generic such as "Welcome to NRO”. Instead you should include the keywords you are targeting. For example, "Discount laptop computer processors, RAM, memory and hard drives from YourNRO.com.” A descriptive title like this tells your shoppers and search engines exactly what your site is about.

What are Meta keywords?

Meta keywords are key words or phrases that describe the content of a given page on your site. Good keywords are those which your customers will use to search for your site. For example, "phones” is a very generic keyword and search engines understand that. A better keyword is "Motorola Q Smart Phone”. You'll want to include any keywords that are applicable to the page. Important: You should NOT include keywords that aren't related to your page as search engines will penalize your site.

What are Meta descriptions?

A Meta description is a short description (2-3 sentences, up to 255 characters) that describe the contents of your page. It should include your keyword phrases, but it must be worded in a way that makes sense to your shoppers. Search engines display your Meta description on their search results page to help their searchers determine if they want to go to your site.
