Why is there so much empty space below the footer area of the home page?

Purpose:
To explain why empty space displays below the footer area and how to remove it.
If you have a large amount of empty space below the footer area of your NRO store, it's probably caused by the number of categories and sub-categories in your dropdown lists. In other words, the site is built based on the length of the longest dropdown column, so you're looking for a category or sub-category list that's longer than the page itself. It may be in the first level of dropdowns or several sub-category levels below. The empty space may seem more obvious on the home page because the home page is typically shorter than the category pages.
NOTE:
If you are also using CPOnline, you may have additional categories defined that work separately in NRO and CPOnline. Even if the categories are suppressed (disabled) in NRO, they are still used to determine the page height in your NRO website. If the offending category with too many sub-categories is part of your CPOnline category structure, then once you close your CPOnline store and remove the categories from Counterpoint the problem will likely resolve itself.
Solution:
In NCR Counterpoint, select
Setup / Ecommerce / Categories
and reduce the number of sub-categories in each category.
Republish your data to NRO.
