Creating Additional Attributes for the Purpose of Layered Navigation

NRO/ Catalog /Attributes / Manage Attributes

  1. Go to Catalog / Attributes / Manage Attributes .



  2. Select Add New Attribute in the top right corner.



  3. Once you're on the Create Attribute screen , fill it out as below:
    Attribute Code: anything you want this to be
    Scope: Global
    Catalog Input Type for Store Owner: This allows you to configure what kind of field this should be.
    Default Value: This setting allows all new items uploaded from CP to NRO to be set with this default value.
    Unique Value: This setting allows you to configure whether every item has something unique in this field. Most merchants set this to No.
    Values Required: This setting allows you to make this attribute require a value. Most merchants set this to No.
    Input Validation for Store Owner: Most merchants leave this as None.
    Apply To: Most merchants apply this attribute to all of their product types.
    Use in Quick Search: This setting lets the item appear in Quick Search.
    Use in Advance Search: This setting lets the item appear in Advanced Searches.
    Comparable on Front End: This setting lets the attribute be something people browsing your site can use to compare against other items in the storefront.
    Use in Layered Navigation: This allows the attribute value to appear as a filter used by the customer in the layered navigation
    Use In Search Results Layered Navigation: This setting allows the attribute value to appear in layered navigation search results.
    Us for Promo Rule Conditions: If set to Yes, this will make the attribute appear as product attributes on the Conditions and Actions tab of promos which allows the promotions to either include or exclude items with the value selected.
    Position: This will move the attribute up and down in the layered navigation, depending upon how it compares to other attributes' position.
    Visible on Product View Page on Front-end: This will determine if the item appears in the tabbed content on the item detail page.
    Used in Product Listing: This will determine if the attribute appears in the Product Listing for catalog listings. Options include: Yes/No. Most merchants set this to No.
    Used for Sorting in Product Listing: This will determine if  the attribute appears in the "Sort By” option for catalog listings. Options include: Yes/No


  4. Move to the Manage Label/Options side tab:
    Admin: this will default to the name of the attribute
    Default Store View: This is where you will name the attribute appropriate for the customer
    Save Attribute button in upper right.

Adding to Attribute Sets

Catalog / Attributes / Manage Attribute Sets

Before you can start using the attribute you just created, it must be associated to all attribute sets that can utilize this attribute.
  1. Browse to Catalog / Attributes / Manage Attribute Sets .



  2. Select your first attribute set .


  3. Move the Attribute from the Unassigned Att ributes column to the Groups section under your General folder.



  4. Save your changes.
  5. Repeat this step for all attributes sets .
