Custom Sorting Products in Subcategories

Overview: This article will discuss how customer sort products when selecting the top level category.

Custom Sort Products in the Top Level Category

When viewing the storefront, you select a top level category, and the selection will bring in the products from all of your sub-categories. While it is relatively easy to manually sort the products in your sub-categories, this manner of sorting is not reflected when viewing the top level category.

This method of sorting will not affect the existing custom sorting at the sub-category level.

This method of sorting only affects the Sort By option of Position on your category listing.

Below is an example of a store where products are being viewed through the top level category with no position-based sorting.

For this example, we will be sorting the products above in one of my top level categories even though they are being populated from different sub-categories. Start in your admin panel by going to Catalog > Manage Categories , and then selecting the top level category you would like to adjust. By default, when viewing the top level category in the admin panel, it does not list any products.

All of the products from the subcategory will be listed here. Using the text box under the position column, enter in a number that will represent its place in the category. Any numbering scheme you like can be used, but lower numbers will appear in the product listing before higher numbers, and will operate by numerical order. Giving all of the products in a category is not necessary if you are only trying to have small selection of items appear before the rest of the products.

For example, if you have five items you would like to show first, you can set their positions as 1-5, and leave the rest of the products in the category as the default position of 500. Below is an image displaying NRO reflecting the change of position on the items. While the default sorting in the product listing is not done by position, it can be change by clicking the Position column name.

Below is an example of resorted products using the Sort By - Position option using the sorting options configured above.
