Overview: This article will discuss how customer sort products when selecting the top level category.
Custom Sort Products in the Top Level Category
When viewing the storefront, you select a top level category, and the selection will bring in the products from all of your sub-categories. While it is relatively easy to manually sort the products in your sub-categories, this manner of sorting is not reflected when viewing the top level category.
This method of sorting will not affect the existing custom sorting at the sub-category level.
This method of sorting only affects the Sort By option of Position on your category listing.
Below is an example of a store where products are being viewed through the top level category with no position-based sorting.
For this example, we will be sorting the products above in one of my top level categories even though they are being populated from different sub-categories. Start in your admin panel by going to
Catalog > Manage Categories
, and then selecting the top level category you would like to adjust. By default, when viewing the top level category in the admin panel, it does not list any products.
All of the products from all of the sub-categories can be populated into this screen by changing the far left dropdown box from
Yes
to
Any
, and then clicking
Submit
. Please note that this will being in ALL products from ALL sub-categories in your store, not just the current top level category you have selected.
As you can see, after clicking Submit, the screen has been populated. Now products can be manually searched for, sorted, and positioned based on your needs. To manually change the position, click the check box next to the item, and this allow allow you to enter in your sort number in the
Position
column. Once completed, click the
Save Category
button in the upper right.
After adding positions and saving products, the category products view will only show items that you have changed the sort order on. When new products need to be added, the same process will need to be followed. Change the dropdown to
Any
, click
Search
, and change product position.
WARNING:
Please ensure that when you are selecting products from the product list that the
core
SKU (the item number as it is listed in Counterpount) is selected. When NRO creates products in the store such as gridded items, it creates the core SKU, and each individual grid cell combination is created as a child item under the main SKU. These child items have a much longer SKU number that is only used by NRO, and these child items that represent the grid cell options do not display to the customer. The image above is a perfect example. The core item number is WIIMOTE, but the alternate colors options offered by the gridded item each have unique and longer SKUs. Do not select these child items!
Below is an example of my resorted products using the Sort By - Position option using the sorting options configured above.
