Solution:

NCR Retail Online is our customized version of the Magento Community product. Some features of the Magento core product work a specific way and it's not a good idea for us to change the core product. For example, changing the code of the core product could break extensions created by third party developers that are approved for NRO and are installed upon our product. So, we must leave the core product as much in its original state, as possible. That's not to say we don't patch Magento Community with security patches and other patches to keep your customer's data safe. Keeping with the core product is more about not changing how Magento behaves, from a storefront perspective.

Magento sorting, out of box, sorts in ascending order. For that reason, new items are pushed to the back of their respective categories, unless the shopper in the storefront changes the order to descending. It is possible to manually a product sort order to items, but this can be tedious and would likely require maintenance, when the items are no longer "new."

There is an NRO approved extension that will allow you to have your new items sort in descending order and it also gives a lot more nice sort options that can be selected by your customers. These additional sort options include Most Viewed, Best Value and others! The extension that can do this is called, "Improved Sorting for NRO."
